I enjoyed this one very much! I wasn't so lost as to who the characters were as I was in the previous book. I still need to go back and read the first two books so I can get to know some of the characters even better. I was expecting it to be more like a lot of cozies that I have read, focusing on surface issues, but this one dives deeper into the characters, focusing on the relationships and personalities. At times, this was fascinating, but at other times I felt like I needed more investigating and less analysis.

The mystery itself was very well written, but the way it all wrapped up felt slightly too convenient. Aug 17, Henrietta rated it it was amazing. Loved the last few pages. Jun 18, A. When Merry Wynter returns home to her castle in upstate New York, she finds her best friend has brought a high-strung and overly dramatic opera singer, Roma, to let her relax and recover from a crippling case of stage fright. Although she escapes unscathed this time, Merry and a friend find Minnie murdered in her post office just days later…with the same letter opener plunged into her body. I really enjoy the Merry Muffin Mystery series.

Not to mention our intrepid amateur sleuth lives in a castle! I like the arc Merry has made from the first book to now, in her relationships as well as within herself. One of the things I like the best about her is the compassion she has for Minnie. Be sure to read to the very last page to see what happens! There are plenty of red herrings to keep the reader guessing as to who the murderer is! This is a very well-written mystery, and hopefully there will be more in the series.

There was backstory from previous books that would have helped, but by about one third of the way into the book, the author filled in what I needed to know and made the book more enjoyable. In addition to a tightly written mystery with several suspects that kept me guessing, Victoria Hamilton weaves the theme of home into the story. The love for family, friends, and family history pulls her in and allows her to create a home where she wants to stay and allow her heart to mend.

The author includes a couple of muffin recipes at the back of the book…both sound absolutely delicious and perfect for upcoming fall weather. I received a copy in exchange for my honest opinion. All thoughts and views are my own. Aug 02, Rosemary K rated it it was amazing.

Merry finds that Pish, her great friend and mentor, has installed a temperamental diva of an opera singer in her castle as his newest salvation project. Roma and the postmistress at the Autumn Vale post office have gotten into it while she was gone and when Minnie, the postmistress turns up dead, Merry and her house guest get dragged into the mystery. Because this murder happened at the post office the FBI is called in so Sheriff Virgil Grace cannot take as active a role as he would like but protecting Merry and those that she loves is still high on his list.

While trying to piece together what happened in spite of the fact that Merry also had no love for Minnie, and wants her "castle guest" Roma out she feels she must get involved as other friends have ties to people she feels are suspects. This mystery had lots of twists and turns and was fun until the very end!!!!!
