I had a great time illustrating this fun little story in the October issue of Highlights Magazine. Here are a couple of the alternate sketches I did for the first spot: I had fun sneaking in a little worm character throughout the illustrations.

Coming in August, from Stone Arch Books: View all titles and interior samples. To make an inkwell, scoop out a hole on the top side with the melon baller or the spoon. With the blade of the knife, scrape the top of the potato inkwell to create some potato juice.

  5. Make sure an adult helps you with the knife, and never point the knife towards any part of your body. Scrape the juice down into the inkwell. Scrape down more juice as needed. Dip the top of a toothpick into the potato ink and write your secret message on a piece of paper.

    Be careful not to prick yourself. As the ink dries, the writing will become invisible! You can also use invisible ink to write a secret message between the lines of an ordinary letter.
