Too much talk, too much inane philosophizing, and too much "pig-headed" ignorance or stupidity from the farmers' side here. From page one throughout most of the entire book it almost never ceases.

Concerning Manifest Destiny U. Senator Thomas Hart Benton, chief proponent , Fargo doesn't think much of it, apparently not sharing a view held at that time, that the whites with impunity can push the Indian aside, as Americans went through this mid-century period of 'western expansion' while spreading from coast to coast. At one point early on page 16 as Tricia talks enthusiastically about Manifest Destiny, Fargo says "You sound like a damned politician". Telling us what he basically thinks of Senator Benton and the Manifest Destiny philosophy sweeping the country. Most experienced 'trailsmen' of the time would have left these idiots to their own flawed, inadequate devices, Manifest Destiny or not, but ole Fargo has more heart than brains at times.

For a man who wants to avoid trouble as he does he is certainly adept at 'stepping into' trouble often enough.

A must read for all Trailsman fans no doubt, but for others, only a so-so outing in the saga. Indian Commissioner Louis V. Bogy, , on Manifest Destiny It was part of the reason men had taken to calling him the Trailsman. True to form it is a great story and a real Western in every sense of the word. From beginning to end the author keeps focus on the story, filling each page with excitement,fast-action battles, wonderful characters ,a real feel for what it was like to struggle to stay alive as the early settlers took on the enviroment, angry natives, dreamers with wild ambitions, and whatever else confronted them.

Sometimes stories give the sense that the author is just writing "stuff" to fill the pages;but that is certainly not the case with this yarn. I didn't find as single page in the book that wasn't filled with action or excellent descriptions of the desert, the way of life of the Apaches,or character descriptions.
