PAYBACK TIME: A Mystery

Whenever the story starts to slow down readers will be swept up into an action packed description of a fourth and out play that Mitch is reporting on, bringing a fresh sense to the book and reviving this adrenaline charged book. But the real excitement of the story is centered around Mitch, the protagonist, snooping around Angel, the mysterious football player who seems to old and is sensational, yet downplays how good he on the field. Angel's past slowly unfurls in front of Mitch, but when the mystery is solved, and the worst happens, it's up to Mitch to see what kind of person he really is and try to help fix the problem that he created.

While most authors would flounder about with this kind crisis, and try to have the character make decisions that don't make any sense or have them have unrealistic conclusions. Deuker's characters are true and accurate. And it is through his sensational character development that he is able to show the change that Mitch makes, allowing his conclusion to really end with a bang.

Between the exciting football games, the unfolding mystery of Angel, and Deuker's engrossing characters this is a great book. I personally couldn't put it down, and I would recommend it to fans of young adult sports books, mysteries, and anyone just looking for a good book. As a Middle School teacher of thirty years, I would rate this book as five stars. The reading level is on target, the characters are true to life, plus there is lots of football to keep reluctant readers involved. The violence is acceptable for most students.

This book earned the Maryland Blackeyed Susan award and in my school was voted best new book by our sixth, seventh, and eighth grade boys. To buy Payback Time, please click here. I found the book "Payback Time" by Carl Deuker to be very interesting. The main character is a high school senior named Mitch True, he is a part of the schools newspaper group and wants to go on to publish articles for big newspaper companies when he graduates. But his senior year took a big turn when he was not made head of the school paper, he was instead put on the sports section. At first he did not like the idea of doing the sports articles until He found out that he would be doing them with a girl named Kimi.

They became very good friends throughout the book and make very good articles for the school papers sports section. They also got into a deep investigation into one of the football players who seemed to be hiding something. I would recommend this book to any people who like sports and mystery books. So, when a new kid, Angel Marichal, shows up and is the best football player his Seattle school's ever had, he jumps right in to investigate. What he finds out, shocks him and his school. You'll just have to read it to find out if he gets a good story. If you like sports books, this is definitely for you Jan 25, Dakota Riedesel rated it it was amazing.

Have you ever read a story that involves a kid that's a beast and moved all the way across the country to play football? A reporter for the school's newspaper has to follow all the sports and finds this kid that is a beast and is sitting on the bench. He starts looking into the mysterious thing and tries to find out why hes sitting on the bench when the starter is smaller and not as good as he is. I enjoyed this book because it involves sports and has an adventure. Aug 10, Kim Bahr rated it really liked it.

Strong play-by-play description for football fans. Also a good theme as to why you should not stick your nose into other people's business. Aug 24, SchultzBryM rated it really liked it Shelves: This is about a kid who is a person who interviews the player after the games. The book is Payback Time, the author is Carl Deuker.

So far I would give the book a four star rating because at some points it can get a little slow at times. But sometimes it will get you sitting on the edge of your chair and have a little mystery. I also like how the book has a little bit of romance. The one bad thing when Mitch-the main character- is just talking to people.

Or when he's going to the game to interview a player or a coach. Kimi stepped back then and gave me a push. I stood tall, sucked in my gut, and knocked hard on the door. After a minute it opened. The security cop- a giant who could have been a poster boy for LA Fitness- looked at me as if I were a fly that might not be worth swatting. He looked past Kimi, and the edge in his voice softened.

Like in this when you're reading you're just sitting there waiting for some action to happen. The next reason why I gave the book four stars is sometimes it will get you sitting on the edge of your chair. The book will have a few little parts of action the it will leave u with a little cliff hanger.

Immediately both of them stopped and stared, like wild animals on alert. The older guy motioned for Angel to move behind one of the cars in the lot, and then reached into the inner pocket of his leather jacket and pulled something out. It gleamed silvery in the sunlight as he held it stiffly against his thigh. Was it a gun? There is a little bit of romance every once in awhile.

Before I could reach for them, she pulled out her iPod, stuck the buds in her ears, put on sunglasses, and leaned against the window. She was gone then, her eyes closed, her music filling her world. At this point i would still give it four stars.

Dec 19, Chase Seliger rated it liked it. Ever since Mitch was little, he has had the dream to be a reporter. Everyone knows every reporter has at least one big story and Mitch thinks he has his hands on his when a new kid named Angel Marichal comes to their high school.

This is when Mitch starts to dig his hands into places most people wouldn't do. Is Angel hiding something? Is Coach McNulty hiding something? There are a few themes that stand out within this book, including acceptance, persistence, and making tough choices.

These are the main themes within the book because Mitch needs to face many problems that he needs to overcome and he needs to be able to accept things for what they are, which he does. Carl Deuker, enjoys writing books about sports which he has many others that include a sport, which is mostly football, so that is his reason for writing this book Payback Time.

I believed the plot was very good, it had a very smooth transition into everything unlike other books where they jump to conclusion. This book made me hang on my edge of my seat to see what would happen next. This is one of those books that makes you completely visualize it in your head like it was a movie, I was able to see every part like it was a movie. The ending was good but at least there was an epilogue because it continued the ending better, so if there wasn't an epilogue then the ending would've been kind of bad but other wise it was good.

I believe the pacing of the book was phenomenal, because like I said before everything was paced perfectly. I would recommend this book to anyone who is into sports books, and books that have a sort of a twist. Sep 22, Kyle Sheedy rated it liked it. A quote I really liked in the book was "With an eleven point lead, Ferris changed their defense, dropping their safeties deep, trying to take away the deep threat and the quick touchdown" ". This quote I like because the author goes in deep to the game and makes you interested in reading about it every play. The action in the novel Payback Time is incredible, keeping you engaged in every sentence of the book.

It was very interesting to see how a reporter do their jobs. The one thing i enjoyed was how much excitement was in this book. It was interesting to hear all about college football through a reporter's eyes. Plot A boy named Mitch is a sophomore at lincoln college.

He's waiting for the results of whos the head reporter. The names are called and his name was for sports. Mitch knows nothing about sports, but that's about to Pay Back Time Personal Response To me this was a really interesting book. Mitch knows nothing about sports, but that's about to change. His first came he notices a person he's never seen before on the field. The kid's name was Angel. Head coach McNulty had him benched till the fourth quarter then he finally went in.

    Payback Time

Angel tore it up in there. Tackle after tackle he just kept pushing the ball farther and farther back. When Mitch asks McNulty to give Angel a interview he says no and don't ask again. Mitch decides to do some work on this guy. Every game that season McNulty held his star player till fourth Quarter or didn't put him in. Well Mitch finds out that Angel moved from pennsylvania after saving some kid from a gun fight.

He also finds out the gang is looking for him cause Angel pointed them out of a line up for the shooting. So McNulty was just trying to keep him on the down low so he wasn't found. It was relatable to any typical teenager's life that involves young love, self-esteem issues and even high school drama. The only negative aspect of this book that I could think of was possibly excessive football scenes.

I do not recommend reading this book if the reader is not interested in football or sports in general. I enjoy football so I loved the book but someone who feels indifferent towards football may want to steer away from it. Otherwise, I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who remotely enjoys sports and wants to get their hands on a good read.

Payback Time--Trailers made for the book by readers. THANK YOU ONE AND ALL!

It was worth my time and it won't waste yours. I would enjoy reading more books by Deuker in the future. Payback Time is a book about sports and a high school newspaper writer, a book that I found very interesting from the very start. It wasn't boring and slow developing; once you start reading you want to keep going and going. The story is written in a very real and exciting way, as if you are there in person watching what is going on.

I really enjoyed reading this book - it was very well written and exciting to reading. It was easy to follow and not confusing but still very interesting at the same time. The story is about a boy named Daniel, nicknamed Mitch, who is a senior at Abraham Lincoln High School; he is short, fat, pale, and not very handsome.

Mitch is a writer for the school newspaper, the Lincoln Light. Mitch wanted to be editor of the Lincoln Light his senior year but he did not get the job; instead Alyssa Hanson was named editor. Since Mitch was not named editor, he thought he would be lead reporter instead, but Alyssa changed his assignment to sports reporter. She said he was the best writer for the newspaper and the only thing that people were really interested in was sports.

The football coach wants Mitch to focus on only reporting about the star quarter back Horst Diamond. Mitch's photographer, Kimi Yon, a very smart and good looking girl, goes with Mitch to his first interview of Horst Diamond on the first day of football practice. Kimi tells Mitch she's tired of hearing about Horst Diamond and that they should interview other people for a change. As they sit on a hill and watch the first practice, Mitch sees a new kid trying out for the football team and notices that he is big and strong and has the arm of an NFL quarterback.

Kimi tells the coach that they want to interview the new guy, so the coach calls the boy over and asks him a few questions and gets him to throw the ball a few times so he can check out his arm. The boy just lobs the ball in the air and doesn't throw the ball like Mitch saw him do earlier, and the coach tells them they can't interview him. The coach asks the boy what his name is, where he's from, if he played football there, and what position he played. The new boy, Angel, from Houston, says he got cut from the football team at his old school which he says was a big school, and that he plays linebacker.

Mitch and Kimi watch the rest of the practice and notice that Angel does not try his hardest on the field - he doesn't put all of his effort into the drills. This makes Mitch and Kimi want to find out more about Angel. Mitch has always wanted to cover a big story that will get attention and shake the world. This isn't a story that big, "But it was a story. Mitch and Kimi are now very interested in finding out what Angel's story is and why he doesn't try his hardest on the field.

Angel is a great athlete, big, strong, fast, and very talented; he does very well in games and is in on every play, but for some reason the coach doesn't play him very much. Mitch is trying to find the missing pieces to create his first real story. What is Angel's story? Why won't the coach play Angel more and let his talents be seen on the field? Were you ever a reporter or athlete when you were in high school? Ever feel the suspense of a groundbreaking story or a last minute game change?

Well if you want to feel that rush of excitement again or want to feel it for the first time, read Payback Time. Carl Dueker uses his writing skills and knowledge of being a teacher to relate to a teen's mind very well. He thinks what a usual teenager thinks. He talks about how important sports are in the teenage mind and about how to keep in shape and workout. So, in his book he emphasizes these to a high school student named Mitch True. Mitch True is an overweight student, and he loves being a journalist. He writes for his school newspaper and is the best writer there.

He is disappointed with his life by being made fun of and not fitting in at school. During his senior year, Mitch doesn't get the position that he was long been waiting for, Editor in Chief, but instead the gets to be the sports writer. He is first sad and disappointed about the job he got but as time passes, he learns to love it. He also gets to work with a beautiful girl named Kimi. Mitch and Kimi are given the task to interview key players, mainly the quarterback Horst Diamond, and take pictures.

But, when they start watching the team practice they see a new boy who is very talented. Mitch sees him throw but when the coach tells him to throw a few, he throws them like a drunk.
