Belleza terrible (Spanish Edition)

"Él también es una belleza."

Yes that is normal. Only adjectives assume the gender and number of the word they are linked to. If two nouns are linked with a copula like to be , then the genders don't need to match. In this phrase coche m and arma f are of different genders, but because both are nouns, the gender doesn't change. So you could make a phrase like this:.

So instead of the feminine article, they use the masculine article. Even though it is a feminine word, they write: A condition for this rule is that the first syllable of the feminine noun has to be stressed.

If the first syllable is not stressed, then the word gets a feminine article. That is very helpful. Are there many more words like these? Does it only apply to "a-" and "ha-", or do we do something similar for other vowels?

It is surprising that that error has gone unchallenged for two years! I know this comment is 2 years old, but for anyone else who is reading this, what we would say in English has nothing to do with how it's said in Spanish. All Spanish nouns are grammatically masculine or feminine, and which pronoun is used depends entirely on the grammatical gender of the noun. This combined with the fact that this section is about abstract ideas makes me think this is a bad sentence to include even though nothing is technically incorrect about it.

I've heard all types of animals of all genders refered to as beauties by hunters, biologists, and general animal and nature lovers.

This includes domestic and farm animals, birds, mamals of all types, lizards, snakes, and even bugs. I put "It is a beauty" and was wrong. Does the emphatic "E'l" restrict the subject to being a man? Grammatically it's correct but you could be treated as a little bit cracked whether you consider a stone as a person: The feminine counterparts are "ella" and "la".

No, all things have gender. Here in Kansas, one is more likely to say "She's a beaut". Not rare at all. More likely said by a man in reference to an object commanding respect machines especially. Rather tactless to use it in reference to a person though "beauty" fits better for that. Not as likely to be used by a woman, though one would still use "She" if she did never 'He'. Yes, I have the same issue. In English you would never, ever describe a man as a beauty. You might describe treasured objects that way, or sarcastically ugly objects or sticky situations "The boss wants me to sort out the mess with overdue accounts.

It's a real beauty. You can also use it to describe a woman, though usually only in print, because its somewhat formal and old-fashioned. But never, ever a man. The correct translation should be something like "He is also very good-looking. You need to talk to more women. At my work they're always saying "Oh my God, he is a beautiful man! I know some people do use it this way. Glad to hear some confirmation this is the case. Where I live, "beautiful man" would be suspect. People would be wondering what was meant. We would say, he is good looking, or he is handsome.

Trying to think of a noun for a male "belleza", I entered "He is a good-looker" and Duo did not accept. I agree with all those who have said the above sentence could be used for a non-human - a horse, dog, or other creature; but for a male person I think English does not have an appropriate noun to translate for a male "beauty".

MaryEllen, Duo should not require you to enter a double-negative in English. In Spanish it is expected, in English it is incorrect. If Duo accepted a double negative in English, this would be a mistake. I hope you reported it. A couple of people have asked this, but I don't see the answer. I hope we can get an answer from a native.

When you are referring to an inanimate object car, table, sculpture, etc. And if you need to emphasize a particular object, I think you can say "eso a es una belleza. You have perfectly explained it. Obviously, if you want to grant personality to anything, like a car, you can talk about it like a person:. The use of demonstrative adjectives with people is rude but grammatically correct. It's used just in family or colleagues atmosphere:. Este se cree muy gracioso - perhaps This is thought rather strange or This is considered especially strange. And the question for me was, that "this" is considered rude in English if it's referred to a person?

There is something we often say in English. When a friend says " That's funny! Funny is a really "funny" word. It can mean amusing makes you smile - gracioso or chistoso , or hilarious makes you laugh out loud - tan chistoso or divertido. But it can also mean odd or peculiar raro , or curious or unusual curioso , or suspicious sospechoso , or insolent insolente. I think I get the idea of " Este se cree muy gracioso " now. I guess in English, being particularly fond of understating everything, we might just say "You're so funny!

Irony, as you say, although I hear more people adding " It doesn't work too well in print, but the rude part is turning away and making the remark to someone else while the not-so-funny guy is still there. I am out with friends, including Juan and Nico. We are probably in a bar. We may have drunk some beer. Juan makes a comment. He clearly thinks it is very funny and rather clever, but it is neither of these. Would this fit your phrase " Este se cree muy gracioso "?

I don't want to tell Juan what I think directly, so I turn away and I say to Nico in a theatrical voice "Did someone make a joke? It was so funny I almost laughed! Do not try this with strangers. They may regard it as too aggressive, and it might start a fight! Estoy en la ciudad con mis amigos, incluyendo a Juan y Nico.

Yes, you are great Roger. Your Spanish is very good but some things I would say them differently:. My Peruvian friends warned me not to use the words beautiful or pretty when referring to men. Even guapo is considered bizarre for a man to say about another man.

They said you would be automatically considered to be 'homosexuale'. Haha - cultural differences I guess. In Korea where I'm living, it's commonplace to say that to another male friend if you really think that is true. Nobody thinks you're interested in the person in a sexual nature. How do you know they're talking about a man and not a dog, a boat, or a car? I know English speakers will refer to such things with personal pronouns instead of saying "it", I wonder if Spanish is the same.

Yes, you are right. In Spanish are even more frequently used than in English that pronouns with animals or things. Popularity Popularity Featured Price: Low to High Price: High to Low Avg.
