Ash: Return of the Beast

Her disbelieving eyes followed it as it floated through the air and dropped, as if released from an invisible hand, onto the bed. Desperate to cover herself, but afraid to touch it, she hesitated. It's up to you. Linda's eyes strained without success to find the face from which the oddly hollow-sounding voice had come. She sat up slowly and, with her gaze still fixed upon the stranger, she cautiously reached for the robe, slipped it on and wrapped it tightly around her shivering body. What did you do to my daughter?

Better than before, in fact. I'm sure you will agree. Linda turned to Sarah. The girl was still standing beside the bed, blank-eyed, no expression whatsoever on her perfect face. Linda turned again to the stranger. What have you done to her? For the first time in her life Linda wished she'd taken Brian's advice to keep a gun in her nightstand.

But, no way was she going to do that. Guns were horrible things. Her daughter's face was a daily reminder. Now she hated herself for being so stubborn, so G. Tears welled up in her eyes. What matters is that you give me what I came for. If you don't, then I can easily return the scar to Sarah's face. In fact, I can make it into a deformity of hideous proportions. Something so dreadfully awful that she'd rather be dead than be seen. Of course, I could arrange that, too. Her voice weak, pleading.

What do you want from me? I'll give you anything. Just leave my daughter alone. Exactly what I wanted to hear. Now, somewhere in this house is a book. A very small book. The Keys Of The Gatekeeper. You give it to me and Sarah will be as she was. Minus the scar, of course, because I always keep my end of a bargain. Then I will take my leave and you, dear lady, will never see me again. Pay attention and don't test my patience. I don't want to be here all night. She tried to think, tried to envision the few books on the shelf in the den.

She wasn't a big reader. That was more Sarah's thing. The Keys Of The Gatekeeper It didn't seem even remotely familiar. The Beast was reading her thoughts. Linda suddenly realized her body was moving toward the edge of the bed. Ravenwood finally managed to grab the handle of the trapdoor. She flung it open. Kane pulled his coat up over his head and scrambled across the floor toward Ravenwood. She was already half way down the ladder when he reached the trapdoor. He hurried down after her and tried to pull the door shut behind him but it was already on fire and a large burning piece split off and dropped down, just missing his face.

His foot slipped on the ladder, he fell awkwardly to the ground. Ravenwood helped him to his feet and could see immediately he'd dislocated his shoulder. She gently bent his arm at the elbow. Then, like some kind of a miracle, the pain was gone. He looked at her and gave his arm a few test rotations.

Before you were an FBI agent and a burglar, you were a chiropractor. Another piece of burning wood dropped from above. They both jumped back and looked up into the flaming inferno. Thick smoke was billowing down into the enclosure where they were standing. Linda stood, sobbing, in the midst of a dozen books scattered on the floor of the den. I don't even know what it is. I've never seen it. I swear to G. It can't be here. A 3-shelf bookcase was filled with books, large and small, thick and thin. But The Keys of the Gatekeeper was not there. The Beast spoke calmly.

Do you understand me? Kane was about to offer Ravenwood a belated 'thanks' for fixing his shoulder when his cell phone buzzed. He pulled the phone from his pocket, looked at the caller ID.

The last thing he expected was a call from his ex-wife. He was tempted to ignore it but he had a bad feeling it might have something to do with Sarah. Why else would she call at this time of night? I'm kinda in the middle of Inside had illustrations and words in ink that somehow looked fresh. One illustration was of a giant snake that extended from one page to the other with a dragon-like head and claws near its head. Ash blinked to it. To Ash, nostalgia filled his mind. Ash looked to see Misty wearing the discovery. Besides, you don't know what someone of beauty looks like if she's in your face.

I'll be shocked if you have a girlfriend who will agree with you! That's when she found a piece of concrete protruding out. To her, the fortress had shown some wear.

That's when the floor under him collapsed. He let out a scream before falling into the hole, Pikachu on his shoulder. The hole looked pretty deep. Tracey came out of a room full of more gold: Hearing the scream, he and Misty ran in as soon as the trap door closed. No one was sure what happened. Ash and Pikachu hit water below after a long drop. They surfaced in a fast-running stream.

Before they could realize what happened, they hit waterfalls and fell. They kept hitting water for a few minutes. After what seemed to be an eternity of falls, they reached a calmer, steadier stream. Gasping for air, Ash and Pikachu found some land to dry themselves. Once dried up as much as possible, they headed down a path inside a cavernous area. After a small trek, they soon found an exit. One fired a chorus of cannons at the other and absorbing damage while people in white uniforms jumping from one ship to the other. Charizard, I choose you!

Emerging was a large orange lizard with wings and a flame on its tail.

Ash hopped on the lizard. Flying, Ash and his creatures hope to save those on board before it's too late. Now he was beginning to change his mind. Worse yet, he was even beginning to like her and that bothered him more than the idea that she could sense the presence of demons. Over the past couple weeks she'd sensed there was something going on in his head that he wasn't telling her. Something is going on in that house. I don't know what it is but I think Cowl knows a lot more than he let on. Kane was just about to voice his agreement when Wheeler peeked his head in the door. What have you got? Wheeler dragged a chair over next to Ravenwood. They're just kids having a good time making tons of money.

That music they play? They don't take any of that stuff seriously. All that devil crap and stuff, I mean. They're just really good at what they do.

The Transformation Cowl sat cross-legged on the floor, at the center of the Seal with the urn in his lap. He was groggy, emotionally and physically drained from the previous eight days of grueling initiation. His naked body shivered beneath the hooded robe. The Messenger stood towering over him just outside the perimeter of the great Seal. He spoke solemnly but urgently. Then he uttered three words. Instantly, a small glass vial containing a blue liquid appeared on the floor in front of Cowl. Under normal circumstances Cowl would have been astonished at such a trick but now he was far too spent to register much of a response at all.

He stared blankly at the object for a moment, then reached for it. Holding it in one hand, he tipped it gently back and forth and looked up at the Messenger as if to ask, 'what is this?

That's really all you need to know. Now, remove the stopper and pour the contents into the urn. A soft crackling sound bubbled up out of the urn as Cowl emptied the liquid into it. The urn became warm to the touch and an inky blue mist rose up out of it, filling the room with the thick, stifling fragrance of Jasmine. He knew what he had to do next. The nine days of initiation had come to this. The moment had arrived. Cowl stood up, removed his robe and let it slip to the floor.

Completely naked, he held the urn firmly in his hands and glanced at the Messenger. With that, he closed his eyes, brought the urn to his lips and tipped it back slowly. The elixir and the ash had congealed into a bitter, thick, oily substance that now slithered down his throat like a living thing. As the last drop of the vile fluid slid from the lip of the urn onto his waiting tongue, his eyes rolled back into his head, his body went rigid, then shuddered.

His knees gave out, he went limp and slumped to the floor.
