Aug 08, Nicki rated it it was ok. I read it all, but it was very hard going and extremely long and drawn out. I was relieved to get to the end. Darker storyline than I would have expected, but way too many characters and hard to care too much about some of them. I found Sam pretty dull. Actually Edie was an interesting character who was underused and then disappears. Meaghan was probably my favorite, but again, a lot of background story that really didn't matter too much in the story. There's a lot of TMI like that. Plus I cring I read it all, but it was very hard going and extremely long and drawn out.

Plus I cringed at the line when she says she's from "Oz". Way to know the author is American. No Australian anywhere says Oz!! But it's a small gripe. I don't think I would seek out this author again.

I don't mind a long novel if it's enjoyable, but this dragged and was a chore, although I do commend her very realistic and horrible portrayal or a particular type of man no one would ever want to be around Nick. Nov 14, Adventurouslyloveable rated it liked it.

I did like the book but I was a bit taken aback with the characters. For me Sam was just not really believable. Don't get me wrong - I adore Lesley Lokko and am a huge fan of her books especially Sundowners but I just could not indulge into this story due to the characters which seemed a bit off to me. Sep 16, Ke Yu rated it it was amazing. Are there really nothing that can shield us from the past?

Feb 13, Smriti Brar rated it it was ok. If, like me, you sometimes pick up books just by what you see on the cover, then this book is extremely deceptive and definitely not what you think it is. It's a story revolving around the lives of 4 women entwined in the army world. It gives you more than a glimpse of the army world. Rather, it's a deep insight. It was an okay read. I didn't enjoy it too much. Aug 09, Pamela Todd rated it liked it Shelves: All very different women with very different upbringings and backgrounds.

The novel shows a unique insight into what it is to be an Army Wife, to have a husband absent for long stretches of time and the desperate acts of lonely people. A Private Affair is split between being told by all the women over different time periods of their lives. It shows how they came to be and the road they took to get there. I thought the novel was harsh and brutal, but in a very good way.

There were no rose coloured glasses when showing the true nature of some soldiers or how they treat their wives. It felt very real, and the characters of the woman simply brought the book to life. A sense of trepidation crept over me while I was reading, that far off sense of fear that cannot be places. Though a hefty book to get through, it was worth every word. A very thought provoking read. After having questioned the need of reviewing book covers, I have to say that this is possibly the most misleading book cover ever.

It portrays a shimmering sunny read, but what is within the pages of A Private Affair is way darker. I appreciated the look at the British Army, and I found the character of Nick to be enormously sinister. I wasn't sure about the format of the novel - it was clever in that I kept turning those pages to find out how the beginning linked to the end, but I d It's hard.
