Bandons Best Birding

For more information, contact USFW. The area heading south from the rocks at Coquille point tends to have few birds until you get to the China Creek area. The off shore rocks do have colonies of sea birds but are distant and viewing is limited. The actual beach will have passing flocks of Sanderling and occasional Whimbrel or Curlew.

While I can see little difference in the beach at China Creek it seems as though there is a significant increase in birds as one heads South. The foredune area is the one area that is different from that to the north and it attracts nesting and over wintering Snowy Plover.

An adult Snowy Plover leaving an indentation in the sandy beach just south of China Creek. This part of the beach is managed by the Oregon State Parks and special restrictions are put in place from May through September.

Breaking Waves at the October Sea - Hiking and Birdwatching

These protections are put in place for the benefit of the endangered Western Snowy Plover and essentially require that all people stay on the wet sand and no dogs are permitted. This does not mean that one will not be able to see them, however, as they do move down to the lower portions of the beach at times and are also present during the non-breeding season. Look close at any indentations along the beach as they will often hide in an old foot print or behind a piece of detritus.

If you are very very lucky you might even run across a chick.

Navigation

If you are very very lucky you might run across a Snowy Plover chic like this one which is but a couple days old. These little fellas are born ready to run and look almost like a cotton ball blowing down the beach. For some reason this sandy stretch of beach also attracts a higher number of other birds as well and flocks of Sanderling or Dunlin running before the waves are rather common.

A good place to start looking for them is right at the location where China Creek spills into the ocean. Pretty flat beach with no rock formations but a beautiful day with one lone fisherman trying to coax a nice fat surf perch to his hook A gorgeous day to be at the beach! Very short mowed down area to form a trail for very little reason to put it bluntly. Saw it on a map and added to my list of hikes for today and the dogs enjoyed New River. New River looks like an interesting place to drop a kayak in Don't bother with this one. Most interesting thing that happened on this one was on the road there I stopped and talked to some guys harvesting cranberries.

Interesting area with a nice flat, well groomed trail. This area reminded me a little of Tolowa Dunes but was in better shape. Curiously peaceful area to me. For some reason it made me want to do yoga Maybe should rename New Age Trail Might have rated it higher but you have to walk on a gravel road twice to complete the loop. I fouled up my track but I'll post it just for the pics. Not really a walk but some nice views of the river and jetty. Very small oddly placed lighthouse. Maybe the lighthouse was there before the jettys were built? Didn't go inside because I had my dog with me. Upper area is fenced around parking with walkway so even people with less mobility can enjoy.

It has a nice stairway down to the beach. A hidden gem below is a nice cave or arch in the rock for a good photo op.

I fouled up the track but got some great pics Huckleberries, soft trail and cooling breeze made for a very nice hike. One of the highlights of our vacation! It was a foggy, chilly morning. The sun finally made its debut around noon. Beautiful rocks - the massive ones and the ones that fit in your hand.

Great birding - Review of Bullards Beach State Park, Bandon, OR - TripAdvisor

Thrilled we got to see a few harbor seals playing near the rocks. Give yourself plenty of time to enjoy this walk on the beach. My favorite time to do this is really early in the morning when the tide is out. All reviews " full hookups ". Review tags are currently only available for English language reviews.
