Her parents have finally decided to get a divorce and tell her when she gets home. Of course the worst part is they are taking her out of school and shipping her off to Cambodia for a semester of her junior year.

Her popularity at school will become non-existen Book Review- Notable by Marni Bates Chelsea Halloway is the top notable at her school, in other words, most popular. Her popularity at school will become non-existent. Her parents have sure handedly ruined her life. When she is left at the airport by herself as usual, she tries to figure out how to ditch Cambodia and sneak off to another, better destination. She shuts them out before they have a chance to make fun of her. They are college students and she is a lone high school student. This trip keeps getting better and better.

Just when she tries and starts finding her footing a little with the others and appreciating professor Neal, things spiral out of control and the trip goes from bad to worse. Chelsea, Neal and Houston are in the wrong place at the wrong time. As a result, the trip turns into a race of life and death.

Chelsea has to find her strength, use her gifts and lead her college age friends through a dangerous situation, hopefully all in one piece. This was an interesting book. Chelsea is queen bee at her school and flaunts it a bit. However there is a lot of hurt and anger below the surface thanks to her parents. She has locked so many of her emotions away that it makes her a complex character the more you read.

At first sight she appears to be a selfish and spoiled person, a type of mean girl. As the reader progresses through the story, her layers of insecurities are peeled back for all to see. It provides vulnerability for her character which is worth the journey. The author also provides an exciting read full of adventure, danger and emerging trust. Chelsea figures out on her own how worthwhile she really is.

It was a good read and an excellent YA story. In addition, her mother frequently belittles Chelsea's intelligence, and it's impossible for her to avoid taking those cutting comments seriously because Chelsea's boyfriend recently dumped her for the smartest girl in school.

Then, as if her life wasn't already in bad enough shape, Chelsea's parents decide to ship her off to Cambodia for a study-abroad trip. Chelsea is completely out of her element, not only because it is a foreign country whose language she doesn't speak, but because everyone else on the trip is a college student.

Worst of all, their group runs afoul of a dangerous drug lord, and it's clear to Chelsea that the professor in charge of their trip isn't capable of saving them. It's up to her to figure out a way to get them all out of the country alive. This is the third book in the young-adult, chick-lit, Awkward series. It has a hugely different focus than the first two books, not merely because the protagonist is the quintessential "Mean Girl" who has been an unlikeable antagonist in the first two books, but also because the setting is completely different.

Rather than occurring in the familiar YA setting of a typical high school in the United States, it takes place in an exotic, foreign country, and the story includes elements of action-adventure, rather than the non-dangerous, chick-lit, comedy of errors offered in the rest of this series. There is still plenty of humor, though, and Chelsea is a sympathetic heroine because she grows tremendously in this story, demonstrating a great deal of moral and physical courage under very trying circumstances. There is a romantic subplot in this book, but the main focus is "girl power," as is the case for both of the other books in this series.

Overall, this is an amusing and endearing chick lit novel, and anyone who enjoys that type of comedy will find this an entertaining read. I rate this book as follows: I received a copy of this book as part of a Goodreads Giveaway. I don't think that I ever expected to actually like Chelsea Halloway because she seemed like Queen Bitch Extraordinaire but then she became a lot less bitchy towards Jane so I figured I'd probably really like her, or at least learn to tolerate her.

The one great thing that I really love about this Awkward series is that I find something that I can relate to with each character. Mackenzie, Jane, and Chelsea are all different people with different personalities and yet with each of them, there's so I don't think that I ever expected to actually like Chelsea Halloway because she seemed like Queen Bitch Extraordinaire but then she became a lot less bitchy towards Jane so I figured I'd probably really like her, or at least learn to tolerate her.

Mackenzie, Jane, and Chelsea are all different people with different personalities and yet with each of them, there's something that they go through, or a characteristic of theirs that really let's me connect with them and understand the way that they think and feel and why they act the way that they act. And it just makes the book better for me because now I can sympathize with these characters and the story becomes a lot more personal to me.

I understood how Chelsea felt about always having to try so hard and yet it was never good enough for anybody. I know how it feels to be told that if you don't take one class then you won't be accepted into any university, granted Chelsea's marks are shit and mine are not but still, I understood how she felt.

It is not encouraging to have someone tell you that you are never doing enough. Trust me, I have experience in this type of area, I'm amazed this girl hasn't cried herself to sleep throughout her high school years. But I admired how she took charge of the situation that she was in as unbelievable as it was and I really love how she matured throughout the story without ever losing her Chelseaness.

She was still sarcastic and she still had power over the other sex and she still loved to flirt but she had softened. She was a lot nicer and she actually cared about everyone, she thought about other peoples feelings instead of just herself. I loved her relationship with Houston as well, yeah they argued all the time but they were really cute together when he wasn't being condescending and I loved how they got together in the end. I loved the characters and I loved Chelsea and I especially loved that she managed to let go of Logan and move on at the end of the book.

She may not be book smart but I have absolutely no doubt that even with her shitty grades she would make it far in the world. I just had a lot of fun in this book to be perfectly honest and if you're looking for something quick I'd suggest reading it. Jul 30, Daisy rated it liked it Shelves: So I really liked Invisible, the second book in this series and was really excited to see what Chelsea's side of the story would be! And Cambodia doesn't seem like the safest of places to ship your teen who easily gets into trouble to. There's a serious case of bad parenting going on here and I didn't like it. She's no-nonsense, smart and doesn't take crap from anyone. And I hated that her parents made her feel unsure about herself and mostly that her mother made her believe that she wasn't intelligent.

Because you know what, she may not be a rocket scientist, but Chelsea is smart.

And nobody, especially not one of your parents, should ever make you feel otherwise. So boo Chelsea's mom! I liked that Chelsea slowly learns to work with the group and realises not everything that annoyed her at first was so bad in the end. I like that she really grew throughout the novel and used her strengths to the advantage of the group. That being said, I thought the events with the drugs and the dealings with the druglord were unlikely. I mean, seriously, I was kind of rolling my eyes at how they got into the whole mess. And I didn't really see why they wouldn't call for help instead of trying to make it all better themselves.

So yeah, ridiculous events, but satisfying character growth for the main character. I thought the love interest was such a pompous ass at first, but later he grew on me. And I was rooting for them to get together! It was nice to see Chelsea's relationship with Logan from Chelsea's POV and see what happened and not just what the rumor mill had been circulating about them. And I liked that we got to see a little of Jane again, cause I love Jane! All in all, this was a cute, quick read, but with slightly ridiculous events. It made for light reading and I enjoyed it, but I liked Invisible a lot better!

I must confess that I even loved the mean girl more than the geeky underdog, which is quite a new thing for me. Chelsea is a mean girl , but she has her reasons. I guess it opens up this thought how hypocritical it is to hate the mean girl, when we barely know her.

And because of that, I hated Houston because he was such a big jerk to Chelsea. At least the rest of the study group that accompanied her to Cambodia were decent enough to treat her better after a while. I was conflicted between getting really angry at her or cheering her on for wanting to save her professor with or without the rest of the group. To add to that, she goes on a life-changing trip to Cambodia with a bunch of interesting characters. My only problem is that some characters could be frustrating sometimes, but it all ended up pretty well so I was still able to like the book overall.

Sep 20, Juhina rated it liked it Shelves: Of course in this book we witness the other side of the mean queen, the true side that make us instantaneously sympathize for her. All the readers, including myself, label Chelsea as the mean, jealous, antagonist like character, but in Notable you see that all of that is a f 3.

All the readers, including myself, label Chelsea as the mean, jealous, antagonist like character, but in Notable you see that all of that is a facade. She just plays along with what people expect from her to the point that her parents have decided a trip all the way to Combodia would rearrange her priorities i. A Combodia educational trip with a couple of undergraduate students. Marni Bates always takes the most ridiculous and hilarious scenarios and making an enjoyable and light book out of it. This book is no exception.

These students end up on the radar of a combodian drug dealer and have to set up a deal with him in order to release their professor? Also, I liked the banter between Chelsea as well as one of the undergraduate male students that was assigned to watch over her and report any misbehavior yup, you guessed it, love interest!

I really liked him and thought he was a great change from the typical bad boy. Come to think of it, None of the love interests in Bates' books are bad boys. Overall, while I wished there was more depth in Notable, it was still a very enjoyable companion novel that I would recommend for readers in need of a light and fun read. I can't wait for the next companion novel because I read the first chapter of it and it sounds deliciously scandalous ; Definitely pick up this series if you want fun, quick, contemporary reads May 23, Nolan rated it liked it Shelves: I read this entire book today during a six-mile walk--not even a very brisk one at that.

It's super quick and lots of fun. You'll have to suspend some copious amounts of disbelief, but the fun and smiles that result from your time with it are worth it. Chelsea Halloway is one of Smith High's Notables! These girls give the concept of the in-crowd a whole new meaning. She always gets her guy--well, almost always; and the upcoming divorce of her parents and the resulting decision to ship her off to I read this entire book today during a six-mile walk--not even a very brisk one at that. She always gets her guy--well, almost always; and the upcoming divorce of her parents and the resulting decision to ship her off to Camboida for a while won't cause so much as a stumble, unlike her awkward nemisis McKenzie, who apparently stumbles a lot according to Chelsea.

But the tough girl act may be wishful thinking. Within hours of Chelsea's arrival in Cambodia, the college professor who is in charge of the students who are part of the study abroad trip gets accidentally tangled up with a major drug lord and gets himself badly beaten and hauled away for his trouble. The college students in the group are panicing and befuddled to say the least, and it's up to high-schooler Chelsea to take control--and take control she does! This book is squeaky clean for those who worry about such things; there's a tiny bit of kiss-and-cuddle, but no profanity.

And it's wonderfully classic Marni Bates. I've not once been disappointed with any of her books; they're just fun, and in this case, the change of Chelsea Halloway from shallow and bratty to take-charge cool is actually written skillfully enough to be largely believable.

I was impressed with the way Bates was able to take a character I didn't care for at all and craft her into someone for whom I actually cheered. I very much enjoyed the Audible edition of this. It was nicely narrated, and Chelsea Holloway's voice was one the narrator achieved rather well. Looking for something to listen to while you walk?

This book certainly shortened the trek ofr me; here's hoping it works that way for you as well. You could say that this book was notable. But you could also say that it was great. Personal choice, ya know?

  6. I thought that Marni Bates did a fantastic job at executing the mean girl kind of thing. Yeah, sure, it was a little stereotypical, but you cares? Marni managed to prove that even though Chelsea didn't exactly get the best SAT think that's it. Sorry, not American scores, it certainly didn't make her dumb. And it proved that not all mean girls are mean for no reason. They have wants too and they may put on a steel exterior but they are not real. No, I am not a patriot for mean girls. I thought that the romance was so cute! I'm glad she ended up with that person because they were just perfect for each other.

I have not yet read any of the other books in the series, but I really want to.

If I am to get them, I may as well wait for the fourth book to come out. While you don't need to read them before Notable, I can see why it would enhance your reading experience. I would recommend this to anyone open to contemporaries, looking for a good book with a different storyline. That only leaves one continent. Nov 19, April rated it really liked it Shelves: Chelsea Halloway is the main focus of "Notable" book three in the Smith High series. That's how it should be though, right?

After-all she is queen of the notables at Smith High, able to destroy your social life in the time it takes to flip her beautiful blonde hair. Everyone has this image of Chelsea - perfect, beautiful, and blonde. And according to her own mother dumb. Her mom was not shy about pointing out her flaws or fighting with her dad constantly about coddling her.

So when Chelsea finds out that her parents are divorcing its really no big shock, but what she didn't expect was for them to ship her off to Cambodia! Now she's in a dangerous country with a group of college kids who stereo type her from the moment they met, running from drug lords! How in the world did Chelsea get mixed up in something like that?

You'll have to read the book to find out. I absolutely love Marni' s quirky fun books and Notables is no exception. Notables practically oozes charisma from every page! Only Marni could make a book about a girl running from drug lords so deliciously fun and intriguing. Her characters are relatable, interesting, and multi-demisonal. I really enjoyed the adventure in Notables, not to mention the romantic tension as well ; Overall it was a quick fun read. Exactly what I've come to expect and enjoy from Marni Bates. Jan 31, Risa rated it really liked it Shelves: Notable revolved around Chelsea who was shown a different side back in Invisible.

She is Logan's ex and she is still hung up on him, kinda. Her parents are going through a divorce and her parents send her off to Cambodia for this student program. She is quite dramatic, broken-up, hurt, and all about keeping up her bitchy persona. Other students are all college students. There is Houston yeah, Chelsea had so much fun with his fun , Amy, more like 4.

There is Houston yeah, Chelsea had so much fun with his fun , Amy, Liz and Ben and their jolly teacher. Chelsea is seriously annoyed by all his happy-go-lucky personality. Things get ridiculously awkward and bad when their teacher gets mauled up by gangsters and they end up on the run with drugs. Chelsea saves the day with all the craziness and the help of her new and old friends. I liked this installment as well.

I don't know I think Marni has a knack of writing such great contemporary and realistic a Cambodia trip gone wrong can happen, y'know -- it's ridiculous but at the same time can totally happen. I like how she writes. I like her sarcastic, witty, awkward, bad-ass heroines. I don't know- her books are totally readable. They are a really good timepass and can be read in one sitting. They are easy going. Dec 26, Savannah Books With Bite rated it it was amazing.

Each book features a character deeply and in a new way. Chelsea is your typical popular gal. Neglected by her parents yet forced to adhere to their standards, Chelsea is forced to leave on trip outside the country in order for her to get her life together. I think this plot plays well with character development as well as plot build up.

It builds up nicely with a start that is harsh yet emotional and then flowed onward to a trip of a lifetime. Even though she is a popular gal and always gets what she wants, she turned out to be quite different than what I thought. I like that the author used Chelsea's popularity to her advantage.

You think that just because she is popular and has bad grades doesn't mean she doesn't know anything. She is actually quite smart and uses what she knows to her best ability. Because of her being popular, Chelsea has some thick skin. She is very blunt and very good at hiding any hurt. I like the way Chelsea develop over the course of the story. She doesn't completely change and that's okay but she learns to be herself. She learns to love and accept herself. This is another great addition to the series.

Packing a punch with a smart-mouthed gal, Notable is fantastic. May 19, Melanie Adkins rated it it was amazing. Chelsea Halloway is the queen of the Notables. She's held the position for quite some time and not going to willingly give it up just because she's moving. Her parents are divorcing and they decided to send Chelsea to Cambodia while they deal with it all. It's going to be quite a wake up for Chelsea. She'll be traveling with a college group her father knows and it won't be all first class as she's use to.

Still it could change Chelsea for the better, couldn't it? Marni Bates is an absolute wond Chelsea Halloway is the queen of the Notables. Marni Bates is an absolute wonder at writing about teens. Her books are always well written and have characters that are relatable to any teen. I really enjoyed this one! The queen of mean getting her just dessert reached the teen girl inside of me and thrilled her. I do recommend this series for your teen.

They'll see they aren't alone, many deal with the same issues. I love that Ms Bates ends her books on an upbeat note. Gives hope to all of us awkward, invisible former teens and touches the new teens in a terrifically positive way. I found no issues in this one.

I gave this one 5 cheers out of 5 because it really was great seeing the Queen be dethroned. She just seemed so much older than Logan in this book. I will admit that there were times when I had to put two and two together because I didn't read the other books in this series but for the most part, this book reads as a stand-alone. Chelsea came a long way in this book. You can see that she was struggling with a lot of things but she dealt with those issues in a pretty grown up way.

I came to really like her character but I could tell that had I read the other books, I probably wouldn't have liked her much. Still, this was an enjoyable read. One that was quick and cute and sometimes, that's exactly what you need. There are no discussion topics on this book yet. She then signed a five book deal with KTeen. In her free time she can be found reading romance novels, hiking, singing really loudly and off-key in public and watching copious amounts of television--strictly for artistic inspiration, of course.
