Book I (a fools journey 1)

I think we've all been in a place in our lives where we felt the need to fit in and the urge to give in to peer pressure. Pannebecker has a writing style that is quite compelling as he sets the stage for Ben's life lessons as he travels the road into early adulthood.

I was surprised at how taken I was with what started as a teenager's fascination with a motorcycle gang and the path that our character is led down because of that fascination. Of course, like any good serial should do, this one left me intrigued and wanting more of this intense and promising story. Mark's story telling is amazing. It's easy to be lost in his worlds. They feel vibrant and real. In this tale, the first of twenty-one planned novella's following the major arcana of the tarot, we're introduced to the protagonist Ben Porter. The world is gritty.

Biker gangs, drugs, and major life decisions face young Ben as he deals with his friend Craig. I recommend this story and look forward to future installments as they are available. A cracked rib or two, swollen eyes, jaw and nose hurt but not broken, cut lip, loose tooth. He shook his head. To be part of the gang, he starts to hang out with Craig, also known as The Magician and to act the part, he becomes introduced to the world of drugs and violence. Will he ultimately find solace in this world he craves or will he lose himself in the process of finding his own way? I feel like a good part of us had moments growing up where we just wanted to fit in. I loved the way the series is laid out in the order of Tarot Cards. It even connected really well with the characters as the two main ones in this story symbolized characters of the Tarot.

This novelette was short and sweet but right to the point and an intriguing introduction to such a poignant series.

Mark Pannebecker's evocative writing style shines in The Magician, the first novelette in his ambitious part series A Fool's Journey.

The story of young, naive Benjamin Porter and the mystical influence of Craig Marse achieves a stunning balance between grit and sensuality. The brief, bright images in this book's few chapters set the stage for the Fool's coming of age. Mar 29, Siobhan rated it it was ok. A Fool's Journey: Book I, The Magician by Mark Pannebecker

The short, snappy feel will appeal to those who enjoy that kind of writing, though with only the first part it is difficult to feel fully involved in the action. Many moments feel like shock tactics without payoff - such as invoking racial tensions - but these may be relevant in later installments. Later parts may make this early offering feel like more of a larger narrative, however.

Though the basic world-building is accomplished with well-written descriptions, no major conflict is introduced to get me hooked.

The time period of the story does not excuse this treatment, nor the overall lack of diversity.

Though I was looking forward to seeing how the story embodied the major arcana of the tarot deck, the plot seemed to revolve more around glorifying drug use and dull teenage rebellion. Multiple point of view errors severely decreased the readability of this story, which therefore never grabbed me.

The treatment of women turned me off completely, and I will not be interested in continuing with this series.
