This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Feb 04, Kostan rated it liked it Shelves: A somber account of Australia's inaction and poor decision making in the realm of biodiversity conservation and retention. We're in a dire climate for species preservation but Flannery provides a little light when talking about some of the NGO's going against the grain, and defying inept governments to protect some of our current threatened species.

Dec 04, Terry Savill rated it it was amazing. We live in times where children are nurtured and protected more than ever before, and for a longer and longer period, to ensure they will eventually move on safely into the world. But what of the world they are moving in to. Tim Flannery's essay "After the Future: Australia's new extinction crisis" is an essay of despair for our country and its collective flora and fauna, but it is also a cry for the sake of the planet.

Tim laments over the impotence of our politicians - what was the line Peter G We live in times where children are nurtured and protected more than ever before, and for a longer and longer period, to ensure they will eventually move on safely into the world. Tim laments over the impotence of our politicians - what was the line Peter Garrett? Failure without assistance is deemed acceptable to these corridor cruisers. What is wrong with the nation's community that it cannot find the means to look beyond it's selfish and egocentric needs, and realize that all life is interconnected, and the loss of just one more species may be the beginning of our own end?

If the bees are no longer around to pollinate the crops, and the crops fail Dec 29, Peter Franklin rated it really liked it Shelves: A timely call for action. Tim Flannery mentions the Australian Wildlife Conservancy as one of the solutions and I have thought for several years now that they are a good way of spending funds efficiently for good results.

They and some other similar groups don't have to worry so much about catering for the public as national park services do and are more focussed on main issue. The organisation uses science and measure and reports on results. It is a suggestion that should be taken seriously. A passionate but reasoned call to action for the survival of our biodiversity for future generations.

The animals are lucky to have such a spectacular person on their side as they have in Tim Flannery.

His style is as fiery as his subject matter and he makes no attempt to be politically correct. If you are sympathetic to his argument and style, you will find this to be an exciting essay; if you prefer to keep your head in the sand, it may be even more important for you to read it. I respect Tim Flannery because of his proper scientific observations and reasoning. This is an essay everyone should read.

In many ways this is a difficult essay. While Flannery commendably builds on the landmark Future Eaters hypothesis and accurately portrays the current state of environmental conservation in Australia at a landscape level, including a frank assessment of government and scientific responses, his arguments are familiar and liable to be dismissed by myopic commentators and self interest groups. Flannery all but acknowledges this fate, although his easy tone provides scope for reasonable debate. His support of the environmental stewardship principle is logically and historically sound.

His enquiry into why conservatism and conservation often seem at odds, despite their apparent semantic concurrence, is in step with other global commentators. His assessment of some so-called environmental initiatives, such as the recreational shooting of feral animals in NSW national parks, is on the money and, if anything, constrained. Mooting options such as the introduction of analogues of extinct megafauna is interesting despite Flannery's sober appraisal. The joy for me was that Flannery managed to parade the elegance of the scientific method and model a way forward in such a brief format.

Flannery risks alienating half his readers, if voting patterns are indicative, when he gets conservative governments and big mining companies in his sights. There remains perhaps a little caution, for example his analysis dodges the holy cow that are the sometimes apathetic, sometimes redneck, land managers in the farming community. Nevertheless, he picks good examples of what is increasingly working, such as the Australian Wildlife Conservancy.

His conclusion is brief and reasonably simple and, because of Flannery's status, may stir response. One person found this helpful. See all 3 reviews. Amazon Giveaway allows you to run promotional giveaways in order to create buzz, reward your audience, and attract new followers and customers.
