A joyous wild ride from surfing to birthing full of characters I came to care about as though they were my own family. I enjoyed learning about the surfing culture that has been right under my nose here on my own Northern California coast. I loved the multigenerational family of surfing men. Pamela has an uncanny ability to capture the powerful emotions as they are just emerging.
I don't know any teenage boys so have rarely had a chance to get inside the head of one. And be pleasantly surprised.
The energy of the narrative so reflects Pamela's vision of life as the cosmic wild ride that it is with those feelings that are so big when seen from the inside out. She also offers her knowledge of the birthing process and bits and pieces of spiritual lore to glean. I attended a lecture recently with science fiction writer Stan Robinson and he asked if it was possible to write good stories with people as we want them to be given what scenarios of the future might unfold for them.
The assumption being that flawed or bad people in scenarios of tragedy and doom are perversely of interest.
Pamela has pulled off a compelling story of spiritual connection and community arising as the characters find their rightful place. Now, headstrong Zinnia makes a living using her psychic abilities - a highly prized skill that attracts the attention of another planetary outcast, Nick Chastain.
