Books on zoos are mostly written by zoo directors, outsiders, or amateurs who acquire zoos. A highly readable, personal account, by Terry Boylan about his year zoo career mostly spent at Taronga Zoo, Australia's famous zoo in Sydney. Most people assume they know what a zookeeper's job entails, but behind the scenes is a world they know little about.
Routine work is often put on hold; when zoo inmates decide to opt out of the routine, cause mischief, or even escape. Its written with a light hearted touch, that frequently blends amusing anecdotes, and little known factual information, concerning behaviour of wild species kept in captivity, and the humans who care for them. While making a solid case for modern zoos, and their contribution to conservation, a contribution that is often overlooked and gets little publicity "The Keeper and the Kept" never loses pace, or fails to entertain.
Frequently illustrating that zoo staff can be as unpredictable, and eccentric, as some of the animals they care for.
