This is such a thought provoking place, walking around the ruins of a thriving town and impossible to imagine the horror the people must have felt when Vesuvius erupted. Great Day trip and so much to see there but be advised that when it is hot, there is hardly any shade if at all, so you do feel the heat beating down on you! Take a bottle of water at least.

The queue is long so arrive early! Quite incredible place, much more extensive than you might expect.
We went entirely self contained, by train from Sorrento then paid our tickets at the gate. Don't feel we missed out by not taking the tour, got to wander around at our own pace, which was good as it's pretty hot so nice to be able to take regular breaks in the shade, and that was in October! The crowds are a bit daunting as you approach but once inside they all disperse as there's so much room.
