The Fresh Honey Cookbook: 84 Recipes from a Beekeepers Kitchen

This could be classed as "geeky". This is certainly a book that would benefit from a sequential read through, at least once, as there is a mass of information in every conceivable nook and cranny that you might miss out on otherwise. The range of recipes appears to be broad and certainly, to this reviewer, featuring honey in many ways previously unimaginable. Honey mustard accompanying a piece of pork, the use of honey in a winter vegetable soup and even in ice tea. The recipes are fairly well written with some excellent, thankfully bee-free, photographs. A few common niggles exist: Should you be stuck for inspiration there is even a list of recipes by type to help you quickly make a menu.

There are some suggested sources for honey products that may be of use primarily to U. Have you not had enough of bees and honey? There is even a page of further reading suggestions for good measure. This is a rather charming book that this reviewer might not have otherwise picked up in a bookstore.

You cannot fail to appreciate even if from a distance the humble bee and the wonderful ingredient it works so hard to produce. I think the title is unintentionally misleading. This was not really a honey cookbook, in fact some of the recipes do not even contain honey. This book is more a mix of recipes and beekeeping facts. The book is organized into chapters by the season and months of the year. Each season lists the chores of the beekeeper and then is divided into individual months with recipes. There is a variety of recipes from appetizers through desserts and even some drinks. Here's what I liked: Beautiful color pictures of beekeeping throughout the year and of some of the recipes. I also enjoyed reading about Ms.

Masterton's adventures in beekeeping and all of the fun bee facts throughout the book. What I think could have been improved: I always find it more difficult to get excited about a recipe without a pretty picture. I also would have liked more recipes with honey.

As a novice beekeeper, I really enjoyed this book for it's beekeeping tips and recipes. Perhaps it should have been titled simply "Recipes from a Beekeeper's Kitchen". There's just one problem--I was really surprised at the number of recipes that didn't use honey! There's only 84 recipes in the whole book, so for around a dozen or so recipes to not include honey really brought this book down for me. I kind of felt cheated. That being said, most of the recipes I love the idea of this cookbook; information about honey and bees along with recipes celebrating all the different kinds of honey. That being said, most of the recipes that DO include honey look luscious.

There is a nice selection of photos showing some of the finished dishes, though it would have been nice to have more photos of finished dishes and less of flowers, honeycombs and things like that. Each of the 12 chapters is for one month of the year and features a certain flavor honey, though that doesn't mean you have to use that particular flavor in those recipes.

The beginning of each chapter tells you about that particular honey--where it's made and flavor notes including color, smell, taste and aftertaste. There are also a few pages scattered throughout the book telling about the bee colonies. All-in-all, this is a very interesting book with great recipes. I received a copy of this book from Storey Publishing for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The cookbook utilizes not only recipes with honey, but recipes with ingredients that would not be possible without pollination by bees. The recipes are organized by month and feature a honey varietal to showcase with the recipes for the month. There are a lot of creative recipes in the book that I never would have thought of on my own.

If your into honey or just like trying something new this may be the book for you to try out. And as something fun you can also learn about bees as you cook. Because there are pages about the Queen, and worker bees, and other bees as well.

I think that just something fun because I love to know a littel bit about every thing. Nov 07, Jessica rated it it was ok Shelves: I was SO looking forward to getting this cookbook, but I was disappointed because all of the recipes use different kinds of "specialty" honey - like Tupelo honey or Orange Blossom honey, etc.

I love honey, but I try to only get local honey so I was hoping for more recipes that weren't specialty specific. Not to say you couldn't use your local honey in these recipes, but I didn't like that it was based on multiple kinds of specialty honey.
