If he continues in this vein, Shusterman may find fertile territory for somaesthetic exploration in conceptual art practice, where the relation between thought and action is so articulated. As he explains early on in the book:. Grounded in pragmatism, somaesthetics shares these aims of integrating theory and practice.
But should somaesthetics be grounded in pragmatism? Does it have to be? Here Shusterman may have something to learn from feminist thinkers of the body. De Beauvoir makes for an easy straw-woman in Body Consciousness ; the wonderful feminist phenomenologist Iris Young merits just a few paragraphs; Judith Butler and Susan Bordo are mentioned only in passing.

There are truly shining moments, but at times I think it suffers greatly from the author's attempt to credibly situate his ideas into such a broad, encompassing context; how can something like somatic awareness that seems so simple and intuitive be made to appear so complicated?!
Ultimately, significant parts of the book come across as barely coherent, and left me wondering what was the point to what I just had read.
Thinking through the Body of Maya: Somaesthetic Frames from Mira Nair’s Kamasutra
This was an intriguing book that explored the discipline of Somaaesthetics, or the aesthetics of the body. The author discussed the aesthetics in relationship to style, architecture, Japanese Noh theatre, muscle memory, to name just a few of the topics. The book is a dense, academic read, but well worth the effort as it explores the body through a variety of mediums. I found myself thinking about and experiencing my body with new perspectives as a result of reading this book.
