See a Problem?

Naomi Clark lives in Cambridge and is a mild-mannered office worker by day, but a slightly crazed writer by night. She has a perfectly healthy obsession with giant sea creatures and a preference for vodka-based cocktails. When she's not writing, Naomi is probably either reading or watching 80s cartoon shows, and sometimes she manages to do all three at once. Other books in the series. Urban Wolf 4 books. Books by Naomi Clark. She has been writing stories ever since she learned how to write, but is still trying to master the art of biography writing.

And someone would be keeping notes… This will tie directly into the plot of the next Urban Wolf book, which will take us back to Ayla and Shannon. The scene inside the barn was surreal. Two big floodlights overhead lit the barn in glaring white. Half the huge space was taken up with sheep, penned off from the drama but still hysterically bleating and milling together. A grizzled man in a tattered dressing gown and Wellington boots — surely the farmer — leaned into the pen, talking non-stop to the frightened animals.

Bales of hay were piled high around the rest of the barn, looking to Phoebe like they might come toppling down any second. They formed a rough arena for the main drama. Two more men held down a naked woman. This was their victim, this mad, wild thing? Spalding hurried over to the farmer and Gibbs ran to the paramedics.

Blood hunt - Opposites

They had to be wolves, from the strength they were displaying, but the woman was making them work to keep her still. Phoebe hesitated before following Gibbs — at a distance. Observe, Spalding had said. This beginning is actually a bit more polished than Silver Kiss, which had some chunkiness in its exposition.

The plot gets going quickly and keeps up the pace throughout. It is really hard to put down, so I suggest waiting until you have a reasonable chunk of time to read! The reader is drawn into the book to the point that they are walking side-by-side with the characters. You may want a few lights on when you read that bit. The secondary characters in Dark Hunt dodge the shortcomings of those in Silver Kiss.

They are complex and memorable.

Before the lovers can really get into their vacation, however, a screaming lady werewolf in the street grabs their attention. Asian-American Sun, hysterical and heavily pregnant, is wailing over the corpse of her husband, who has been slain by the mysterious Le Monstre. She also happens to be their across-the-hall neighbor in After all the horrible relationship stresses Ayla and Shannon experienced in Silver Kiss, a romantic vacation to Paris, just the two of them, seems like a slice of heaven.

She also happens to be their across-the-hall neighbor in their lodgings. Ayla and Shannon both have the White Knight thing going on, and reluctantly they try to help Sun contact the local werewolf population for help, since she's broke, too pregnant to fly, and she does not want to go back to her folks in America. Their search leads to a werewolf community center Could life get any less restful?

Of course it can. Ayla and Shannon get beat up, sent to the hospital multiple times, and have creepy, terrifying run-ins with Le Monstre. I had a harder time with Dark Hunt than with the previous Urban Wolf books, because my suspension of disbelief was severely impaired when Ayla and Shannon could not manage to get disentangled from the needy Sun, the disasters with the werewolf community center, and Ayla's perverse need to hunt Le Monstre. Sure, the cops would never have believed them if they'd tried to hand it over to the authorities, but any normal couple would have dropped Sun at the community center, packed their bags, and gone back to England early enough to shift their holiday to somewhere quiet in Scotland.

Blood Hunt

I have no idea what edits Naomi made since then, but I have no doubt it only got better from there. Reasons to read this book: Ayla is rather aweso I was quite lucky to have been a beta-reader on this one, while it was still in the draft stage and as such, I'm quite fond of it. Ayla is rather awesome. She's strong, independent, conflicted, and easy to care about. She's a whole person, who has been beat up and bashed in, and yet, manages to hold it together without sacrificing the people she loves and who love her.

Ayla and Shannon's relationship is of the healthy kind that happens between two mostly mature adults. As much as I enjoy books about two people falling in love for the first time, I love books about the messy aspects of being in a relationship and the kind of compromise, compassion, and forgiveness it takes to hold it all together. Naomi does this 3. Le Monstre is as threatening and frightening as a proper monster should be. Naomi gives just the right amount description to draw you in, while leaving enough to the imagination to unsettle you.

I love a good monster and this is one. It's set in Paris, and everyone loves Paris in the Springtime or the Fall. Well, at least I love the idea of Paris, even though I've never been there. I could probably pull out the old "because I said so," but instead I'll end with this is a fun book to read, and if you like your urban fantasy with werewolves, you''ll most likely enjoy it.
