Thinner This Year: A Younger Next Year Book

It would have been nice for the book to have told me that on either the front or back cover before I read it. Jun 24, David Geschke rated it liked it. Took me over a year from the time I started this book to finish it. This book took a long time to get through because it bogged down a lot for me, and I kept losing interest. Still some very good information here. Same basic premise as last book - exercise forty-five to sixty minutes a day, six days a week for the rest of your life.

Get Took me over a year from the time I started this book to finish it. If you want a decent workout routine and some supplemental info, this book could also be helpful. Also includes some specifics on what to eat or not to eat as well. This book compiles all of the latest research on health, including nutrition, physical fitness and touches on the value of relationships with other humans to your health. First, let me explain that I am not a believer in special diets, unless medically necessary. Since the days of Sylvester Graham, there have been many trendy diets, created and marketed to us to cure all sorts of ills, as well as to lose extra pounds. The book essentially alternates chapters written by Crowley and Sacheck. Her chapters are informative, and her style is straightforward. I appreciated her explanation of how nutrients actually work in the body. Her contributions to the book are based on solid, current nutritional research.

Although Sacheck explains how exercise, nutrition and body systems work in concert, Crowley is the entertainer, telling how following their program has affected his life. For people beginning a journey to better health and longevity, the book has excellent suggestions that are evidence based.

Her forthright style of communicating with the reader is very motivating. Straight talk, almost always presented in a no-brainer way to understand but nothing too hard to understand , and fun to read.

It provided a nice rhythm so you weren't always dealing with a hard topic. Chris Crowley has a great writing style, and if he litigated in front of juries like this, I really don't doub I had never heard of the Younger Next Year series, and I'm under Chris Crowley has a great writing style, and if he litigated in front of juries like this, I really don't doubt that he was a very successful lawyer!

Jen Sacheck was a good foil to Crowley and balanced him out. Despite her incredible accomplishments, she managed to be down-to-earth and not intimidating. Her passion was contagious. The one obvious missing topic: There is a lot of talk about not drinking your calories and eating good food and getting away from the chemicals and added sugars of processed foods. But no statement about diet soda, except Crowley's off-hand remark about how much he used to drink of it. I would have liked them to tackle this topic head-on, and I'm incredibly surprised they didn't.

Scared straight for fatties? My best advice for these ideas comes from another book I read recently: Feb 28, Leanna Manuel rated it it was amazing. This was a tougher read for me than was the Younger Next Year book. That doesn't mean that I didn't like it. It just means that I had to concentrate more to get the information.

Chris Crowley's witty style is definitely present and Jennifer's portions are interesting as well, but contain so much important information that it was a little less entertaining. Together, they work fabulously. Younger Next Year was a game changer for me. So is Thinner This Year. I cannot even imagine skipping a work ou This was a tougher read for me than was the Younger Next Year book. I cannot even imagine skipping a work out day now. I don't think I'll every enjoy it as much as Chris does but I'm definitely a convert.

With regards to the diet piece, that is a little tougher because of my food allergies. I can't just lift the advice from the pages and apply it quite as easily. The overarching message of - don't eat garbage - is applicable though. Remarkably, what I have gained from this book isn't just knowledge because this isn't just a how-to book. A large portion of the book is more why-to.

More importantly, what I gained is the excitement about doing it. I have a bit more belief in my ability to do this. I have a lot more belief in the necessity of doing it too. One part of the book that really made an impact was the discussion of portion sizes and how they have gone so far out of whack, especially in restaurants. For example the recommended portion for tenderloin steak is 3 oz. Recently I went out to dinner and was served a 7 oz steak and 5 green beans and I admit I gobbled up the steak with great relish and didn't find it one bit too large. When I realized I had just consumed calories, I did think perhaps that if I had eaten a pile of veg first, I might have been satisfied with 5 or 6 oz of steak, but 3 oz, no way!

The suggested workouts are contradictory and the diet recommendations are so restrictive that the authors do not adhere to them. My flesh is weak AND my spirit is only so-so willing. The advice is excellent, if hard. The voice of Crowley's writing is sometimes good and sometimes too much. T Despite the title, this is really an anti-diet book. The nutrition scientist was good. It is pretty interesting how exercise makes your nutrient absorption and waste systems work properly, while extra fat itself causes damage to your blood vessels.

I am slowly getting motivated to eat less and exercise more. The reality that my cells are either growing stronger or decaying is important. Dec 15, Rick rated it really liked it. Having read Younger Next Year which I truly enjoyed as I also pictured myself as that 70 year old downhill skier. Thinner dives into more detail about how to achieve weight loss and fitness with goal of having a more enjoyable existence in our third act. Loved the science supporting what we already know to be true. So I think if you're approaching your fifties and sixties it's worth reading if you want to have an active lifestyle for as long as possible.

This spin-off focuses more on weight-loss and social connection as means to a joyful, healthy lifeKing and I love this one too!

We are especially enjoying practicing the dynamic stretching routinehelps these age-group bodies get started in the morning and makes us fit for the rest of the day's adventures. Once again, 20 on my 52 in 52 Quest: Once again, Crowley's charming voice conveys the joy and possibilities of our Third Actanother term for The Third Liferetirement. I like how he asserts that the part of ourselves is played by usversus roles we may have had to adopt during the Second Acta freeing and empowering concept.
