Jake's Tale Starfall Silent E Book 6

Rangell's Jake's Tale will fascinate those who grew up in the 40's and 50's in New York: It has an authentic voice and presents captivating and detailed descriptions of common scenes in life in those days. For those shocked by today's violence among young blacks, Jake's Tale is a vivid reminder of the time -- within living memory -- when street toughs were largely white: The central theme in Jake's Tale is Jake's concern about his own moral values: Rangell's Jake delivers this account in a series of vignettes, some demonstrating his loyalty to his friends, some the loyalty of his friends to him, and some the loyalty of outside gangs and mobs to whom Jake's group had shown allegiance.

His father, always his loyal friend, occasionally enters the narrative. Sometimes he coaches Jake in effective violence; other times he defends Jake himself. For those of us whose fathers taught us how to fight on the street, it rings true. One reviewer minimized this theme, describing it as Jake wondering if he cares about others.

However, I think the reader cannot dismiss Jake's concern so easily. Personal allegiance is a constant theme in tales of personal courage. For example, in "Horatius at the Gate", a poem known by every English schoolboy 00 years before Jake, Horatius observes "How can man die braver, than facing fearsome odds, for the ashes of his fathers and the temple of his Gods". Horatius then goes on to list all those his actions will protect: Horatius, about to risk his life to keep the Etruscan army from entering Rome, at no time lists the city of Rome or its citizens as the reason he fights.

And at the end of the battle for the gate, he sends his two comrades to safety across the now nearly-severed bridge. When his comrades realize he has stayed behind to protect their escape, they unsuccessfully try to rejoin him. In this, all three act with primary concern for each other. Similarly, many modern accounts of behavior under attack in war find that soldiers are more motivated to secure the safety of their fellow soldiers than by the larger objectives of the battle or the war.
