This is part quote, part paraphrase from the introduction to a lovely book of Irish Fairy Tales compiled in by William Butler Yeats. What makes this a great read is the universality of the tales. This sketch although summary, encompasses everything: There must be fidelity to a goal and purity of heart, values fundamental to salvation and triumph.

There must also be beauty, a sign of grace that can be masked by the humble, ugly guise of a frog; and above all, there must present the infinite possibilities of mutation, the unifying element in everything: Men, Beasts, Plants, Things. This is a tale I already knew under a different title Dauntless Little John in the Italian folktales, perfectly demonstrating that these tales under numerous guises are universal.

Another of my favourites has echoes of Don Quixote Apr 11, Caitlin rated it really liked it. I am a sucker for fairy tales and this beautiful collection of Irish stories is charming and informative.

Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry

I would appreciate more background and explanation of the key fairy figures but the stories are well written and entertaining. It is like entering a secret world of what people believed for centuries in Ireland. The Irish are very attached to their mythology and when reading these stories they just feel magical. As much as I love other cultures' mythologies and fairy tales the Irish ones jus I am a sucker for fairy tales and this beautiful collection of Irish stories is charming and informative. Mythology and fairy tales are important because although they are not science based fact, they are explanations for the natural phenomena, landscapes, and histories of long lost earlier cultures. They are of great value and should be cherished, not ridiculed. The people and storytellers have a matter-of-fact neighborly relationship to the "good folk" as long as you leave them alone and are a basically decent person, you should be fine and a general common knowledge of how to live well in a land where the Otherworld is constantly threatening to break through.

The fairy tales I read revolved around a healing lake, a just and benevolent king, and fairies. T'yeer-na-n-oge is a strange place that stops time, but if you are able to leave it, all your time catches up with you. William Butler Yeats, before becoming an acclaimed poet and receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature, was fascinated by Irish folklore. This volume, Irish Fairy and Folk Tales , is his compilation of traditional Irish tales from various sources.

It is separated by subject: The styles, lengths, and quality of the tales are as varied as the subject matter, but it was a wonderful means of meandering through Irish fairy tales. I would not call it an "easy" re William Butler Yeats, before becoming an acclaimed poet and receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature, was fascinated by Irish folklore. I would recommend this to readers who have some understanding of traditional Irish fairy tale elements and Irish history.

There is not concise and clear explanations as you are reading although the footnotes and notes at the end of the book are very helpful. Overall, Irish Fairy and Folk Tales was a great way to ponder traditional Irish folklore from one of Ireland's most loved literary figures. I Love leather bound books and this is no exception this is a beautiful book with very nice detail the sides of the pages are a gold to match the silver and gold design on the front, back and spine.

There is no Ribbon page marker unlike most leather-bound books which is the only thing i dont like about this particular book.

It probably goes without saying that my favorite stories involved fairies or giants then! This is an overall good, short read! It's a beautifully designed book as well. Another wonderful collection from Barnes and Noble! This book contains a small collection of stories and couple of poems from Ireland though some of it might not p. The book it self is small and slim and can easily fit in your hands. The cover is beautiful with green, sliver and gold combination!

Only problem with it that it is short and ,depending on how fast you read, can take couple of days to finish. Also unlike other books this one has no ribbon book mark which is a pity.
