Critics agree that Extreme Makeover is more than just another reality show: It is a miracle that creates a new world for a family in seven days.
Unlike God, though, the staff and volunteers usually need the full seven days to complete the project. With its charitable sensibilities and ability to mobilize entire communities with a single episode, EM: HE is setting a standard for a new genre: While, after appearing on the show, a few families express concern about the costs of constructing their new homes and their ability to pay taxes and upkeep, most are thankful. Many businesses, furthermore, are so energized by the experience that they continue to volunteer their services and supplies.

The gifts keep coming in every episode: The numerous material gifts overwhelm the family members and the audi- ence. In some cases, the families are literally overwhelmed—teasers for the program frequently play and replay family members ecstatically collapsing on the ground when they see their new home for the first time. Others bow before their new domestic temple. Hands are thrown in the air and clasped in prayer. The hosts graciously give the new home to the family, receive their thanks, and share hugs and tears.
Once lost and then found by Extreme Makeover, the participants are truly saved. Both texts see helping the needy as a duty. It contained a detailed list of diseases and tragedies Extreme Makeover hoped to feature, including families whose members have Down Syndrome, skin cancer, muscular dys- trophy, or ALS. Does it aim to help people or to market products? Farhi quotes host Ty Pennington as a specific example: Such passages emphasize how the book regards material domestic technology: It should exemplify Christian economy coupled with comfort and solid design.

When aesthetics, convenience, and safety unite in the new home, the family and the viewers experience the practical and emotional renovation of the space from house to home.
The new domestic environment, furthermore, is often seen as a healing space. It softens the tragic loss of a family member, who would have been pleased to see the family in the new home. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has ever wanted to take better care of themselves as this text truly covers the importance of "working out" your soul. This is a book I plan to revisit many times in the future. Kathy Fullerton has the ability to take complex biblical principles and explain them in a way that is easy to understand. In this book she tackles our spiritual walk and condenses the myriad aspects into coherent chapters with applicable exercises. It is written with such clarity that it is beneficial to the new believer as well as one who has been studying the Bible for a long time.
