That there is currently one best brokerage option now that I'm overseas? That I could no longer fund an IRA while overseas? That investing in foreign mutual funds as an American, can result in a huge tax burden? This book isn't about shady offshore investing, get-rich-quick schemes or tax evasion. It's mostly about avoiding the wolves, investing legally and tax efficiently in index funds that are safe for expats, and gradually watching your meager funds grow into something you can afford to live on and retire on.

I've seen US expats return to the US with no home, empty pockets, and broken dreams, because they weren't aware of vital tax, planning, and investment principles. That could have been me; it almost was!

I've read tons of information on investing and tons of information on expat finances, but I have found nothing like this book or the author's website that combines those two issues. The author was a teacher of personal finance at an international school. You can feel his teaching skills, financial expertise, and expat experience on every page. He's not only informative but also generous with his advice see his site and funny too!

This book could easily be shortened down to pages and provide the same message. Yes it presents a great deal of research and anecdotes galore but becomes extremely repetitive getting its point across and the overindulgence in humor can be annoying to some me. Perhaps some people like it but I find it annoying.

Just a little bit of humor and personality goes a long way. Anyway it does contain some very quality information, the same quality investment advice found in Warren Buffet's books, or that of Buffet's mentor Benjamin Graham, and provides a great deal of contemporary research to back up all the advice given. The information for Expats is definitely valuable and the horror stories important lessons indeed. The millionaire teacher continues his crusade to convince us that normal people can plan and save and invest wisely with low fees.

The first half of this book was pretty much the same story told from different perspectives: It was almost as if the author promised every person he interviewed that their story would appear in the book. That being said, there is some good information in here, and every expat should definitely be aware of their situation.

Book guides expats to meaningful life abroad

One of the reasons I chose to purchase the book was because I saw a section in the Table of Contents that mentioned not contributing illegally to an IRA. Imagine my disappointment when that section was about a page long after going through all those repetitive stories Also, it would have been nice to get a mention for us expats who sometimes work freelance gigs in addition to or opposed to long-term contract jobs. Maybe the tax stuff is beyond the scope of this book, especially since it caters to all nationalities, but it would have been nice to get a mention and footnote for extra reading elsewhere, at least.

But it is great to have it all mostly in one place, and if you feel lost or clueless about this stuff, you absolutely owe it to yourself to learn. The earlier version of this book gave me the confidence and know-how to take ownership of my money management. I'd been feeling paralysed about how to make my retirement funding work for me for several years but Andrew's hands-on, practical advice got me up and running and I haven't looked back.

It's great to have this new version with updated information.

I'm a bit sorry Andrew has only included one portfolio style this time round the 'couch potato portfolio'. For those of us who built a portfolio around one of the other model portfolios, it's a bit unnerving that they have now been dropped from this edition. If I did not come across this book before I left the U.

I'm so glad that I found the book so I can properly prepare for my retirement. It also answered a lot of tax-related questions that I still had even after consulting an accountant total waste of money and researching on my own. I never imagined that I could manage my own retirement fund as I knew nothing about investment, but now I manage index funds. One person found this helpful. See all 24 reviews.
