Factual with good attention to historical details but still a wonderful story of the hardships, heartbreaks and optimism of those coming to this country at the turn of the 20th century.

Well written and compelling, I was totally absorbed and entertained.

Although a sequel which I did not know when I first received this book , this novel stands fine on its own. A story that covers half a century, it focuses on Avi Schneider, a Jew who flees the Ukraine after an anti-Jewish riot and immigrates to America. Eventually his family follows, except his beloved brother who persists in remaining in his homeland.

Thus, we follow the momentous events of the first half of the 20th century through the perspective of an American immigrant whose heart and soul Although a sequel which I did not know when I first received this book , this novel stands fine on its own.

Thus, we follow the momentous events of the first half of the 20th century through the perspective of an American immigrant whose heart and soul remain partially with his brother in the Ukraine. Fleishman's fine writing combined with a worthwhile story, well-developed characters, and vivid historical details makes this a tremendously satisfying read. Given the scope of the years and events covered, the author manages to keep the reader engaged, entertained, and enlightened.
