Night Flights Volume 1

Return to the world of Mortal Engines in this new book of short stories about the rebellious young aviatrix, Anna Fang, illustrated by Ian McQue. A key character in the Mortal Engines book and upcoming film produced by Peter Jackson December , this is your chance to learn more of Anna's thrilling past. In a dangerous future world where gigantic, motorized cities attack and devour each other, London hunts where no other predator dares. But Anna Fang -- pilot, adventurer, spy -- isn't afraid. The three stories show gripping, moving, exciting moments in Anna Fang's life: This time delving into our favorite aviatrix, Anna Fang's troubled past.

Learn more about the gritty realities of Social Darwinism and join members of the Anti-traction league in their struggle to throw a wrench in the gears of these mobile cities, sometimes literally. The book is fast paced and high engaging.

My only complaint is that the short stories are just that and leave you wanting more. At pages for three stories, it averages out to about 64 pages per story. I personally have only read this and the first book in the series and look forward to reading the previous installments. Since this is more of a prequel than a sequel. I do not think it's necessary to have read any of the previous books, but having read at least the first is recommended so you know the setting a bit better 64 pages doesn't leave much room for basic world building.

This volume contains three stories about the aviatrix and spy Anna Fang, first encountered in the Mortal Engines series. These stories form a prequel of sorts, as Anna Fang grows from a child at the mercy of an uncaring universe, a victim of Municipal Darwinism, to the dashing anti-hero of the airways we know from the series proper.

The three stories are stitched together with a framing narrative that depicts Anna loitering in Airhaven amongst a motley group of aviators, telling stories. This nar This volume contains three stories about the aviatrix and spy Anna Fang, first encountered in the Mortal Engines series. This narrative also brings the story right up to the Anna's introduction in Mortal Engines.

The stories themselves are rich, evocative, fast-moving and thrilling; and while their primary purpose is to give background and depth to the enigmatic Anna Fang and the world of Municipal Darwinism, they work perfectly well as stand-alone stories for readers who haven't been exposed to the Mortal Engines series.

The illustrations, by Ian McQue, are stunning. No-one paints airships quite like him, but his human and not-so-human figures are tremendous too. The volume doesn't skimp on his artwork - this book is very heavily illustrated, with several of the page layouts designed around the illustrations rather than just having the pictures inserted into the text haphazardly. This is definitely a book worth buying in hardback. The only thing that would make it better would be colour interior illustrations. I never write reviews for reeve books, even though I should- mortal engines is my all time favorite book series, and I love railhead and larklight and fever crumb as well.

I did buy this today and finish reading it like, an hour later- it's pretty short. Three stories about Anna Fang, a supporting character from Mortal Engines, that take place before the main storyline and help expand her character and the world. There's a couple references to Fever Crumb characters, which I enjoy since we'll nev I never write reviews for reeve books, even though I should- mortal engines is my all time favorite book series, and I love railhead and larklight and fever crumb as well.

There's quite a lot, they are all wonderful, and they are There's way more than I expected, one every few pages, with some awesome two page spreads that illustrate cities, people, places, and airships. The book is dedicated to JiHae, as these were scraps Reeve sort of had planned and gave to her during the filming of the movie, but I also like to think it was the fan community's enthusiasm for Anna Fang and those mentioned scraps that helped bring this book out there.

Three short stories combine to tell the back story of a familiar character, Anna Fang. They fit in the chronology as a sort of prequel. It was glorious to be back in the world of the Mortal Engines and a reminder of just how brilliant this series is with its unique and masterful world building. It was a fast dip as the stories are short and it left me yearning to reread the rest immediately. This and a bit of a sell by a librarian could spark new interest in the series. I've always thought the ser Three short stories combine to tell the back story of a familiar character, Anna Fang.

I've always thought the series itself skews teen because of its complexity and themes and this might be a good opportunity for a repackage and re-introduction to teen readers. This new book works well though for middle-school readers and may be just the right spark to kindle interest in the series for good readers looking for something different.

Holo rated it really liked it Shelves: This novella requires too much in-world context to be a good entry point into the Mortal Engines series, but for existing fans, it's an intriguing and entertaining glimpse into the backstory of the enigmatic Anna Fang. The illustrations, too, are stellar and complement the stories within very well, and the fact that the book itself was inspired by the actress' performance as Anna Fang has my hopes even higher for the upcoming movie.
