There is a breadth of phrase, variety of tone, alertness of rhythm, all the musical virtues are there. From the songs themselves I could not possibly wish anything more: Bryn Terfel does just that in his rectial, "The Vagabond". Vaughan Williams's "Songs of Travel" are shown here quite clearly as having a place among the great song-cycles, with Butterworth's "A Shropshire Lad" not far behind, and Finzi's Shakespeare settings quite possibly the loveliest of all.

Malcolm Martineau is the excellent accompanist. The program is truly a celebration, not just of Terfel's artistry, but of the power of the English language. The great Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel has given us marvellously sympathetic readings of this enchanting repertoire. Let beauty awake 2: The roadside fire 2: Youth and love 3: The infinite shining heavens 2: Bright is the ring of words 1: I have trod the upward and the downward slope 2: Come away, come away, death 4: Fear no more the heat o' the sun 5: O Mistress mine 2: It was a lover and his lass 2: Oh fair enough are sky and plain 3: When the lad for longing sighs 1: On the idle hill of summer 3: With rue my heart is laden 1: I must go down to the seas again 2: Dunno a heap about the what an' why 1: It's pleasant in Holy Mary by San Marie lagoon 2: Loveliest of trees 2: When I was one-and-twenty 1: Look not in my eyes 2: Think no more, lad 1: The lads in their hundreds 2: May The directness of Terfel's communication hits you hard.

The song makes builds on normal vagabond characteristics like being lost, having no direction, constant searching, but Beck rounds them out with hope and knowledge. Beck uses his own passion towards music to describe this feeling as "a song that will last all night and for the rest of our lives.

"The Vagabond" by Vaughan Williams [Justin Little, baritone]

Beck recalls what was so funny, "I saw J. Dunckel jog by wearing a leather, mini-backpack purse.

April 22, Air toured briefly to support Hz. Legend , but I am told that Air probably never performed the song. However, when Beck hit Paris on April 22 , Air joined him on stage for a couple of songs. The live version sounds a little loose and haggard, probably due to that they've never played the song before, but all in all, they do an ok job. There's no drummer, so it feels like it drags a little, especially compared to the record.

Beck plays acoustic guitar, and blasts a short harmonica solo, while Air adds some nice piano and perhaps some more guitar?
