Danger Everywhere (The Legion Book 2)

The book starts out with a break in, the Legion hitting a Triple S mech base for some serious thieving, followed by an aggressive clearing out of enemy forces in Port Turquoise. Its newly formed to us at least , skill focused squads reveal just how much the group has adapted and militarised since their last job.

Always a game changer. The angst turns to snark and here is the Miska I was looking forward to. She ups her crazy a bit in this one, but I continue to love her anyway. Except Torricone, who seems destined to be a massive problem. This means some top notch action, but a bit less boundary pushing dialogue. Apart from Miska, women are scarce, but when they arrive on the page, they do so with the kind of presence that pushes the men right off the edge. From pirate captains to soldiers, they are not to be messed with, and these are exactly the kind of depictions I have celebrated since Ripley and Sanchez showed everyone how it was done.

Best of all the new stuff, the Nightmare legion is unveiled. Unveiled and utilised in brutal, bloody fashion. The Ultra and his merry band of the worst of the worst go through people like a hot knife though butter, leaving little more than body parts in their wake. Sometimes just the inedible bits, the succulent or significant sections having been scooped up by a cannibal or trophy collector. In the meantime, revelations about the Ultra are more than enough to keep me up at night. And, unlike Miska, I mean with fear, not the sexier stuff.

Essentially something has been created that is turning into something very different than originally conceived or could even have been expected. The changing alliances and relationships, the slow building of trust and bestowing of responsibility is all made so incredibly tenuous by that one kicker: Regardless of any emotional connections that might be made, they will still do what they must to escape. The incredible detail of the tech and the lived experience of Miska and her Legion against the backdrop of this vast, hardly known galaxy with its competing factions and unimaginably long history all adds to the sense of a complete world.

It practically screams possibilities and opportunities. Never for a second while reading this series have I ever doubted the veracity of this imagined space, the labyrinthine mysteries just making it all the more convincing. Even so, there are hints everywhere if you know what to look for: This series covers all the bases- incredible world building, blood soaked action, and memorably lethal characters- it's one you don't want to miss.

Characters: Kennedy Waters (Unbreakable - The Legion Series)

It was so well written and intense, I couldn't put it down. I won't go into plot details, but the alien mystery really hooked me! So did the fact that the Bastards had to try and adapt to fighting on unfamiliar fronts. This brought about some interesting new dynamics that can only get better. We also got to see a bit more of The Ultra, my personal favorite! If you haven't already read the other books in the series you should definitely read them before going into this one.

All in all, I absolutely loved this book and can't wait to read the next one! Super fun, well written, action-packed kick-ass sci-fi thriller. This one is heavy on awesome fight-scenes. Wish the dad mystery plotline got even more attention, but that's just a quibble. This was a tough one to decide on, but ultimately I came down on the side of 4 stars rather than 3 stars.

Also, be warned, there may be some very minor spoilers ahead. Things I like about this book: This is definitely the best book in the series thus far. The action is more gripping and immediate, the causes feel a bit more sympathetic, the legion as a whole is starting to develop a focus and personality, and the world-building, already a real strength of the series, continues to expand and remain top-notch.

Smith creates is an interesting one, and I find myself wanting to know more. The alien Them, Mars, the Small Gods, Spartans, mercenary factions, pirates, the interactive internet, and the political-makeup of the galaxy all come together to create a vibrant, interesting setting. You also start to get a better sense of how these various factions are all connected, which certainly motivated me to keep reading.

Also, the cast of characters becomes more interesting and compelling in this book. While the majority of the legion is composed of unsympathetic monsters, enough characters are introduced or expanded upon to start making the reader care just a bit more about the legion as a whole and the individual members.

Finally, I like is that Mr. Smith is clearly becoming a better writer; this book flows more smoothly than the previous two and, on the whole, just feels better written. It is always a pleasure to experience an author you've been reading grow in their craft. One thing that is not an inherent flaw, but I definitely noticed, was the UK vs. Smith is from Scotland, I cannot fault him for this, but I feel that most UK authors I've read have had their editors switch punctuation to American style when selling in America.

I do not mind alternate spellings and such, but in the UK they use single quotations marks rather than double when writing dialogue, and I constantly found this jarring. For US readers this is just something to be aware of. Another thing that may not be a flaw and just personal preference is that I would have liked a bit more clarification about who and what the alien Them, Mars, the Small Gods, and the Spartans are, and what exactly the connections are between all of them. I, at least, found myself still just a bit more confused than I would have liked.

However, as that ambiguity is not yet story-breaking, and further clarity is not yet necessary for the world-building, I cannot call it a failing. For the things I didn't like about this book, I would mention two issues. First, the main character. You may like Miska and if so can ignore this criticism , but I never have. I have always found her to be the biggest flaw in the series.

She is a true sociopath, unlikable, and unrelatable. View all 28 comments. It turned out Kennedy's mother was a member of this rouge sect known as the order and was spying on the aunts side of the family by getting together with Kennedy's father. It turned out that the order was responsible for a lot of the bad things that had happened to legion members in the past and that the real illuminati had actually taken it upon themselves to rid the world of demons as well.

The demon had been gathering strength by possessing different bodies and had finally lodged itself in Jared's body Kennedy's boyfriend it was also revealed that Kennedy had illuminati blood in her because of her mam and not only that. It was also revealed that she was the white dove the one who would free the black doves legion members from their fights and duties. After the demon managed to summon another demon into the world the group of legion and illuminati split up one group trying to hunt the new demon while the other stays behind to watch Jared and the demon who were kept under control by a whip turned collar made of demon bones.

At the end it was revealed that Kennedy is not only the white dove but she is also the vessel which is a thing capable of trapping and holding a demon so she's the only hope for Jared and the book ends there. I mean I get that emotions are running high given all that's going on but couldn't the author have done something to not make it so melodramatic?

For me a lot of the disputes felt like little kids squabbling. There are still some revelations which had me intrigued but the characters and lack of drive in the plot stopped me from enjoying this Jan 31, Neil or bleed rated it liked it Shelves: And the white dove set you free.

It's like running in circles. Unbreakable is to ghosts and spirits as Unmarked is to demons. Though, there are still ghosts and spirits lurking in this sequel. I think my problem in this book is that it has been too focused on view spoiler [the demon, Andras, who they unintentionally released in Unbreakable. This demon can possessed bodies and it's kinda predictable whose body will be the last person the demon will be taken in. Besides, I think the characters didn't improve at all or didn't undergo a good characterization Maybe, they did. But it isn't remarkable or even noticeable for me.

And the romance is still unconvincing. Anyway, I still gave Unmarked 3. Senseful, note-worthy and mind-blowing. It redeemed some of my disappointments. And it made the world, the story more complicated and interesting. I bet the third book will be a blast. Sorry just got to ask Am I the only one who thinks that the reason she didn't get the mark is because her mother wasn't the member of the legion but her father still is?? All I ever wanted for us - for Kennedy - was a normal life. I think we both kn Sorry just got to ask I think we both know that's impossible.

Trouble may be closer than she thinks, however, as mysterious events begin happening at the school - not to mention a rash of disappearances nearby, where all of the victims bear a startling resemblance to Kennedy.

Polyvore #3: Priest (The Legion)

Eventually t Unmarked picks off a few weeks after events of Unbreakable , with Kennedy pining away at her new boarding school for Jared and the rest of her friends, and trying on her own to track the mysterious and trouble events that have been occurring since the events at the prison. Eventually the group manages to find their way to each other once again, and the real story starts as they are once again faced with the seemingly impossible task of defeating Andras before he can destroy everything they hold dear.

They'll have to decide just how far they're willing to go, however, when during their first real encounter they run into some unexpected allies, and must decide whether or not to trust them, despite all they've been taught. The first book, while slow to start off, did draw me in and make me look forward to seeing what happened next. We also saw some genuinely creepy settings, the orphanage and the prison, and I was looking forward to what our protagonists would be running into next.

Sadly, it's not as good as I expected after the prison. This wouldn't be bad on it's own - there's plenty of books with fascinating stories taking place in boarding schools, haunted houses, and the like. But there's just not a lot going on while they're there, either. Most of what we see is the group getting to know their new 'allies', deciding whether or not to trust them, and occasionally working on finding a solution to dealing with Andras before the world ends.

It's a lot of angst and little action, especially with Kennedy mooning over Jared the whole time. Compared to the eeriness of the orphanage ghosts, and especially how creepily the prison and it's inhabitants, I wasn't impressed by what we're shown of Andras so far, either. He's somewhat cunning, but not more so than one could expect of a human enemy. His actions, and those he influences others to make are not what I'd expect either - he causes some awful things to happen, yes, but not more than could be done by a human.

He's not as creepy as you'd expect of a demonic enemy, or as impressive. It wasn't a bad book, but it was a bit dull compared to the first. It feels like it's more build-up to the next stage of the plot than a book on it's own. I'm definitely going to check out the last book when it comes out - hopefully things will pick up and we'll get somewhere in that one. The ACR got here in two days.

I was dying to get my hands on an ARC because I couldn't bare to wait any longer. I was jumping up and down like an idiot!! But I was a happy idiot, so I didn't care!! I immediately cracked it open, unable to wait any longer The scary, terrifying, glorifying, w 4.

The scary, terrifying, glorifying, world that I adored!!! I love Kami Garcia's writing style, she always sucks me in from the beginning and glues me to the pages. The story is so addicting and satisfying, that I literary wanted to stomp my feet like a little kid, screaming "I want it NOW" when I was done this book. Seriously, it was that amazing!!! The world has become a living nightmare Andras, a powerful demon has been set free and wrecking havoc on the world. Killing and controlling anyone he pleases and turning their world into hells playground, and he's just getting started Kennedy is the one who set Andras free from his eternal prison.

She is the one who is responsible for all the lives that have and will be lost at the hands of the vengeful demon, but she vows to stop him, or die trying! Kennedy has finally been reunited with the other members of the Legion. Well not the other members, because she's not even sure if she's really even a member of the Legion or not, because she is still unmarked. But Kennedy can't bare the thought to leave.

She knows it's not where she belongs, but her heart is pulling her to the only place she ever felt she really belonged, and that's in Jared's arms. Jared, one of the twins who saved her life on more then one occasion from a paranormal being, and the other members of the Legion have become her only family. Since her mother was murdered by a vengeful spirit, and her father walked out on her when she was young, Kennedy has felt alone, until now. So when Jared finds her after their separation, she's ready to get back with the Legion and undo the mess she created that horrible night she unleashed hell upon earth.

But that's only "IF" it can even be undone As the members of the Legion race against time to find the demon wrecking havoc all over the states, they come face to face with an enemy organization called Illuminati. But what information they bring and secrets they hold, could very well change everything the Legion once thought. But time is running out as the demons start multiplying, and the deaths become more frequent.

The Legion and the Illuminati realize they will have to put aside their differences and work together if they're going to have any chance at finding and destroying the demons once and for all. But when a surprise visit from someone in the groups past surface, and someone else in the group in grave danger, they realize they might just of ran out of time I think fans of supernatural and paranormal books will find this one just as addicting and satisfying as I did!!

Even if you're not a big fan of paranormal books, I recommend you still give it a try, because it's not that dark, bloody, gory type read, so you might find yourself enjoying it!! Overall, UNMARKED was a great second book with twist and turns that satisfied, enough action and drama that kept me entertained, and a continued romance that I loved from the first book!!

This review can also be found at Carole's Random Life I received an advance reader edition of this book from Little, Brown and Company via Net Galley for the purpose of providing an honest review. I recently read and enjoyed the first in the series, Unbreakable.

This book did not disappoint as it lived up my expectations after reading the first book in the series. This book was a fast paced book with lots action, much like the first in the series. I would recommend that this series be read in order because this book picks up right where the first left off and the events of the first book are often discussed. This book opens with Kennedy being not only separated from her group of friends, members of the Legion, but also being sent away to school by her aunt. The book gets it title from the fact that Kennedy remains unmarked after killing a spirit which means she is not actually a part of the Legion.

She is not only crushed by that knowledge but by the knowledge that her actions have release a strong demon into the world. She tracks the demon by focusing on crime and notes that a string of girls have disappeared - all of which look very much like her.

Her friends have not forgotten her and she reunited with them after they track her down at school. Her friend, Elle, is with the rest of the group. Together they work to track the demon and find a way to destroy it before it is able to destroy the world. Their journey forces Kennedy to look into her family tree for answers and she realizes that everything may not be exactly as she had thought.

This book has a lot of twist and turns and is just plain fun to read. The writing flowed and I found myself consuming this story. The love triangle that I found annoying in the first book was gone in this book with Kennedy focused on only one of the boys. I found the characters a bit more likeable in this book than in the first. My only real complaint with this book was that there was no solid resolution. The ending was not abrupt and I am actually okay with the ending but it would have been nice to have seen everything get wrapped up with a nice little bow.

I would definitely recommend this book to others that enjoy a light paranormal story, especially those that enjoyed this first book in the series. I plan to continue with this series and cannot wait to see what else is in store for Kennedy and her friends. Ransom Riggs wasn't kidding - this book really does surpass the original. Especially with its absolutely heartbreaking final third. I swear, by the time the book ended, that was me. It was the closest a non-death sad moment could come to emulating the ending of The Amazing Spider-Man Ransom Riggs wasn't kidding - this book really does surpass the original.

So, I'm not really surprised, but I will say that I am still pleased enough, because I did end up liking it more than I thought I would.

This is by no means an outstanding sequel, let alone an outstanding series in the first place, but it's got something that I sort of I knew that the sole reason I enjoyed the first novel was simply chance, because when I read that one, I was kind of in the mood for a lighter and fluffier read, and I kind of predicted that I wouldn't like the second one as much.

This is by no means an outstanding sequel, let alone an outstanding series in the first place, but it's got something that I sort of like about it. I have to admit that I really grew to like the characters in the first novel, so that foundation was already set and I think it's this fondness I carried with me into this one that really saved Unmarked for me.

If I had to re-acquaint and re-like these characters, I don't think my reaction would have been quite the same. Sometimes I had to roll my eyes quite hard at what they did or said, and sometimes I just wanted to shake them. Still, I have to say there's at least some character development going on, which was nice to see, as well as some new cast additions that I actually liked as well.

Jared turned into the absolute cheese monster, it was a little ridiculous. Also the fact that Kennedy is constantly being mopey and antisocial throughout the whole book — I mean, I totally understand where she's coming from and I don't hold it against her, but keeping up with her little pity parades regularly during the span of almost pages Which bringeth me to my next point actually, which was how frustratingly random the book could be sometimes. My fingers are itching to give examples here, but that would go into major spoiler territory already, so I won't, but I'll just say that sometimes I truly couldn't get behind why this thing or that thing was happening.

It seemed to serve absolutely no purpose at all, except being, of course, a page filler. Something to hold you over until we could move on to the next plot point, but is in essence completely unnecessary and redundant. In the end, I did end up liking the book, as I said, I just didn't enjoy it as much as I did the first one. Which is kind of a shame, but like I said, I'm not terribly surprised or disappointed, as I really counted on this happening.

Well, I for one am still definitely going to be reading the next book, which I think there's going to be one? So far, I still haven't read anything about a possible third one, but judging from that huge cliffhanger this one ended upon, there has to be one, no? Well, we'll see, I guess. So needless to say, my hopes were very high for its sequel, Unmarked. I had it all worked out how I wanted this story to go, but no fucks were given about my unsolicited vision. Everything that happened stressed me out more and more as all my hopes for Kennedy and the Legion were crushed.

Fortunately, the last 80 pages of Unmarked veered off the depression highway and started to feel more like Unbreakable. The ending gave me hope for book three. I'll read this again at some point to see if I like it better without all the expectations I had going into the first read. I read the first book in this series at least a year ago, but didn't feel like I was missing anything by just diving straight into this book.

Polyvore #3: Priest (The Legion) Kami Garcia

Kennedy and co still face the same amount of demon troubles, but any kind of plot twist you can imagine if you've read 'Unbreakable' pretty much happens in this book. Actually, I swear everything that's happened in 'Unmarked' happened somewhere in 'The Mortal Instruments' series, so perhaps read those instead if you like the sound of the angels vs. It was really fast paced and action packed, I really liked the creativity Kami had when coming up with some of the aspects of the supernatural world.

However, it fell a bit flat for me. The writing was extra cheesy in this novel and the pacing was quite off. Overall, it was an enjoyable read and I would recommend the series annoyed that there is no news on the 3rd book though.
