How to Brew and Store Your Own Beer (Lost Master Keys of the Homebrewery Book 1)

First, you need to read several "intro to craft beer" type books, they cover loads of material you need to know. Reading several of them will pound the basics into your head and give you a few different perspectives and approaches to beer. Second, you should read a few more specialized books, like one about a single family of beer styles that you really like or about the history of beer in the US.

That's what you're really here for, no? Tasting Beer by Randy Mosher. The 2nd Edition of Tasting Beer was released in April of ! As you probably know, the Cicerone program and exams are largely based on Randy Mosher's Tasting Beer. It's the Cicerone Certification Program's textbook. You absolutely must read this book. Take lots of notes. Even if you're not concerned with passing the CC Exam, you should read this book.

Brewing better beer than the pros

Tasting Beer is the best of the "intro to craft beer" books out there. It manages to cover more material in an in-depth manner than others. It's all very to-the-point and includes loads of great insets and graphics. Mosher is an expert and it shows. Hey, this one is free! The Brewer's Association BA wants beer consumers to have a great experience when they're drinking craft beer. In order to make that more likely they've made information on how to properly operate and clean a draft system free to all those who need it. The Draught Beer Quality Manual isn't a super exciting reading, but it's critical for those taking the Certified or Advanced Cicerone exams.

It breaks down what each component of a draft system does, discusses how to balance a draft system, and goes into detail about how to properly clean a draft system. If you own a bar, you need this. If you go to a bar and see overly foamy beers and bartenders pouring head off the sides of glasses and garbage like that, you should find the owner and hand him a copy of this book. If you're not taking the CC Exam, you can probably skip this one unless you're just really interested in draft system tech. But hey, it's free. Read a bunch of other books to drill it all in and further explore your personal beer interests.

You definitely need to read others, too, but you have options and should follow your interests. I'd recommend choosing at least 3 of these to read:. Beyond books, keep up with the latest beer happenings by getting a few magazines. I check in with these sites now and again. Gone are the days of boil in a bag instant homebrew kits and in their place is an ever-burgeoning list of exotic yeasts, rare hops and specialist malts — not to mention hundreds of online forums this one is brilliant , YouTube channels and local homebrew clubs. Nelson's attention to detail is by no means rare.

Homebrewers are giving many professional breweries a run for their money. This isn't just a London thing; amateurs across the country are turning their hobbies into careers Homebrewers generally pay a lot more attention to detail and are more willing to experiment than the pros.

In fact the best beer I've ever tasted was made by somebody in their garage — that said, so was the worst. It's easy and cheap to make beer with just-add-water kits but this isn't proper brewing and chances are you won't be proud of the final results. Instead, invest in an all-grain kit, which is essentially an exact replica of a micro-brewery but so small it will fit under the kitchen sink.

Beginner homebrewers tend to be an overly ambitious lot and will often start developing their own recipes very early on. Trying mastering tried and tested styles first. That way you'll master the basics of brewing and learn what ingredients go into making a great tasting beer.
