A new coupling of intimate and historical memory sets this cycle of novels apart. I begin by situating Assia Djebar's dedication to the reworking of the theme of the couple, or its impossibility, in her Algerian characters' memories. Using the context of women's feminist genealogy of the revolutionary and post-colonial period, I compare and contrast Assia Djebar's impulse to create the figure of a new Algerian heterosexual couple in stark contrast with the realities unearthed in the deep tribal and harem heritage by the ethnographers Lila Abu-Lughod, Germaine Tillion, and Fatima Mernissi.

But through the correlations between these ethnographers' consideration of women's courtship songs of impossible desire and the increasingly somber notes of Assia Djebar's variations on the impossible love story, I point to the importance of Assia Djebar's fictional fantasia and fugues in The Algerian Quartet for figuring liberation.

The working through of coupling also informs a potential future for Algerian women, one in which their ancestral pain dissolves and a new series of liberating couples offer an alternative genealogy for Algerian Muslim women. Its goal is to contribute to our understanding of the role of the Bible in the dramaturgy of the French early modern period.

By focusing on dramatizations of the Book of Esther, I show how biblical narrative, when adapted for the stage, becomes an effective vehicle for imagining social change. Each tragedy studied in this dissertation contains a vision of French society remade through the fusion of artistic expression, enlightened governance and transcendent ideals. The periods of social crisis and political change addressed by these plays include the Wars of Religion, the transition from the Valois to the Bourbon dynasty at the end of the sixteenth century, the centralization of royal power under Richelieu, and the rise of absolutism under Louis XIV.

What remains constant in each adaptation is the use of the Bible as a means of staging the foundation of a new era through the renewal of ancient tradition: I challenge the conventional reading of biblical tragedy as a marginal phenomenon by arguing that the biblical dynamic of Passion and Resurrection--renewal through sacrifice--helped transform the tragic genre in early modern France. By testing the limits of the sacred and the profane, biblical tragedy becomes an important framework for exploring the complex relationships between three major institutions of the period: Une oeuvre de Corneille au service de la "riforma melodrammatica":
