Debra puts aside her uncertainty about Abe, an uncertainty that's defined their encounter until this point, because she wants to know the rest of the story that's nothing more than Abe and some caterpillars. And the movie slows down so we can hear the story.

A government employee who wants to expose illegal government activity, and a journalist who wants to break what would probably be the biggest story of his career. But they're unable to connect over those professional reasons. Once Abe makes it personal, once he tells her a story from his life, they bond. And the tension melts away. It's only then that Debra opens up. Later in the movie, we're with two different characters Mark Carr and Paul Budraitis.

They're in the car. When Carr's characters tells Budraitis's a story about growing up in the area. It gets into finding turtles. It's not a special story nor one about mutant turtles. Just a story about kids finding turtles and keeping them as pets. But Carr gives us intricate details.

So I took Boxy out to the creek There's a plot twist. It's easy to miss why the cricket story and why the turtle story are significant. While the cricket story bonded Debra and Abe, the turtle story actually humanizes Carr and Budraitis who had been one-dimensional up to that point.

We come away from the story seeing how normal and human they are. How like us they are. Similar to the way the cricket story inspired Debra to open up to Abe, the turtle story inspires Budraitis to take an action he otherwise wouldn't have taken. If we share our stories we can endear people to us, or influence people to help us. And the stories we hear can cause us to take actions we'd have never considered taking before we had heard them. The affect storytelling has on the world is apparent in our every day lives.

But rarely do we see art make a point of just how powerful storytelling is. And a quick note: After that, it falls off a bit, but still has great songs in Leave the Bones Behind with a great feature by Blu , Scum, and Story and Her. The production is the high point for sure, but the lyrics are good, and the features are on-point he even brings in Pete Rock and Bun B. Definitely worth a listen.
