Tell students they will be learning about informational texts. Have them prepare their notebooks by titling them, then start the lesson What is Informational Text?

Define terms and create a list titled 'Types of Informational Text' on the board while students copy into notebooks. List types mentioned in the lesson and others, then ask: What is the purpose of informational text? How often do you use informational text? At the end, ask: What makes nonfiction text informational? What is an example of nonfiction text that is not informational?
Activity Allow students to work in partner pairs for this activity, if desired. Instruct them to look through it, noticing features of the text such as bold or italicized words, photographs, or labels. Use the lesson What are Nonfiction Text Features? Tell students to use sticky notes to mark the text features, then create a list of them on a piece of notebook paper.
Next to each feature, have them write the purpose of the feature. For example, a student may write 'graph' and 'shows data. When all pairs are finished, have them share their work. The adjustment to the whole group lesson is a modification to differentiate for children who are English learners. Explain to students that being able to comprehend informational text is a very important skill not only in reading, but also in science, social studies, and math. Display the Explore Tornadoes! Hand out a copy of the Explore Tornadoes! Read the text aloud, pausing to talk about how certain text features help you comprehend the information in the passage.
Ask for volunteers to answer the questions at the end of the text. Hand out a copy of the Explore Hurricanes! Arrange the students into pairs, and have them take turns reading the text and answering the questions. Walk around the room to monitor students and help when needed. Review the answers to the worksheets as a class and correct any misconceptions. Challenge advanced students to research different natural disasters and create documents similar to the worksheets.
