The introduction says this book is about patterns in evolution - if there are patterns then it cannot be random mutation based. Chapters by more than a dozen academics vary greatly in their readabilty and explore some of the concepts of evolutionary theory and its challenges.

For a convaluted gyration on evolvabilty and plasticity and its connection with modularity struggle with Chapter Five. Mar 15, Eric Lawton rated it really liked it. Wide-ranging collection written by attendees at a conference, readable by someone with some undergrad biology or equivalent. I'm not an expert but this was a good survey for me.

A good rule of thumb is that series have a conventional name and are intentional creations , on the part of the author or publisher. For now, avoid forcing the issue with mere "lists" of works possessing an arbitrary shared characteristic, such as relating to a particular place. Avoid series that cross authors, unless the authors were or became aware of the series identification eg. Also avoid publisher series, unless the publisher has a true monopoly over the "works" in question.
