The Island Gardens of Takau

The perfect spot to unwind and recharge during our 11 weeks Vanuatu Experience. The north-western tip of Pele is the most sheltered spot from the trade winds with lots of sunshine, white sand beach, beautiful snorkeling at the marine reserve, great Round the Island Walk at low tide and an ancient village fortifications to explore close by.

Enock will happily guide you and give advise, he is a most obliging host! Why stay in Port Vila when you can have your own little paradise so close by and affordable, no cars to anoy you, friendly islanders to talk to and busy children to watch enjoying themselves in and on the water in their canoes. It is really a great experience. If you do the tour of the island: It is great, but there is a part that is harder, with lots of volcanic rocks that you will have to climb up.

To do that from Takaus, go up north-east towards Nguna island first. Locals will tell you that it takes 1 or 2 hours, so count a good 3 hours, if not four if you like to stop by for shells, pictures or people. The village at the south tip is beautiful. If you prefer easy activities, just walk down the beach until the village, and come back the same way: I would recommend this place to anyone as you get to have your own little piece of paradise. There are not a lot of places to stay on Pele and most of people go strait to Nguna but really, go to Takaus bungalow.

There is much more sun there, less wind, and less people. The bungalow is great, very big and clean, with hard floor. There is a net provided for the bed. Enoch will prepare a nice little fire on the beach for you at night, and you'll see the locals fishing un the reef until late at night. If you want to snorkel on Nguna, or climb up the extinct volcano, just arrange a tranfert for the day, it will take 5 minutes litteraly and cost Vt return.

Then you'll have the best of both: See my comment on Uduna Cove bunglaows Nguna island if you want to climb up the extinct volcano.

Food was good and beautiful relaxing island. Local people are very friendy. The bungalow was the only one on the white-sand beach, the snorkelling right of the beach was amazing, the local village Worearu with 24 people was very friendly, our host Enok did everything to make us feel welcome, he took us fishing and to his garden, his wife was a wonderful cook and she let us watch when she prepared special local dishes lap lap , the local children sometimes played on the beach, it was really everything we wanted from our stay on a secluded island. The bungalows were very basic, so not appropriate for people who prefer resorts, there is no electricity in the village and no running water, the toilet and shower are "bucket-based", but that made the whole experience even more natural.

The bungalow and surrounding area was very clean. Enok built a fire on the beach every evening, but since there is no electricity you go to bed soon after the sun sets. Enock Takau and his family were keen hosts who made us feel very welcome in their emaculately clean and well maintained accommodation. We loved their food, the fire on the beach in the evening, and the swing they made for our daughter in the cotton trees.

The bungalow is now bright green and the veranda faces the protected waters of the bay overlooking Nguna Island. The white coral beach in front of the bungalow is shaded by well-pruned cotton trees, and offers great swimming and snorkelling. As a bonus, the sun sets into the sea right in front of the bungalow!
