Rich with history and also with solid characters, this book was one that I had a hard time putting down. Our two main characters have not had the smoothest of childhoods and fate dealt them both a hand that was a far cry from average.

They cross paths more than a few times in this story, showing that the past still follows both of them.

The grittiness of the characters not so perfect lives was balanced with the reminder that no one is perfect. We get a solid look at life during that time period.

I also liked the amount of historical details that the author included, making the story seem all the more real. I did see a few typos, but all in all it was a very good debut read I am looking forward to more books from this author. An enjoyable time reading this story set in the early-mid 19th century America, primarily Texas, though the story ranges over nearby areas as well as Central America.

The strength is the character development, at least with the major characters.

Some of the minor characters could have been fleshed out a bit more, but that's a minor quibble. Some odd formatting and proofreading errors from time to time.

Odd spellings that should have been caught before publishing. However, none of these errors spoiled the enjoyment of the story and how the author worked with the major characters in the story.
