It took years of propaganda and vilification of the other to convince the majority that Muslims and Jews were threats that had to be eliminated. Eventually the Spanish Inquisition resulted in the murder, persecution, torture and forced removal of countless Muslims and Jews. There are many lessons for Americans in this dark period in history.

Inquisition -- Ominous Doctrines of the Perpetual Mystical Macrocosm

The importance of tolerance and respect for others in Al-Andulus is reminiscent of the values many Americans hold dear. A land for the persecuted, a land for refuge. While there is a long history of fearing refugees ; America has helped many escape war and persecution.

  5. Americans and people in general are innately compassionate. Fear, hatred and anger are emotions cultivated in the masses for ulterior motives. In times of racial division, religious persecution, and widespread intolerance; it is important to know our history. It is important for us to understand the mistakes humankind has made and perhaps learn from the good times. We cannot expect everyone to have the same religious and political views but we have to understand that we are all striving for the same goal. We want our families and our communities to be safe. We want the ability to act freely without impeding in the rights of others.

To practice our faiths in safety; to raise our children in safety; to provide for our families and to live in peace. These desires do not see race, religion, creed, or nation. These desires are universal and the first step in building a tolerant society is understanding that. The first step in building a tolerant society is cultivating compassion for those who may not agree with us.

In fact, declassified KGB documents indicated that this frustrated Soviet efforts to spy on our security agencies. Also, most of the people called before the HUAC committee were then or had been members of the Communist Party—although some were disillusioned former Communists who had shed their denial of Stalinist horrors. Edgar Hoover deserves more credit for American anticommunism than McCarthy does.

When McCarthy started smearing Republicans and the Army, the powers that once supported him ended his career as a demagogue. Although Schrecker describes the American anticommunism as organized and effective, she unequivocally condemns it as political repression. In her final lectures, Schrecker reviews the injustices and personal destruction that McCarthyism left in its wake. One more thing worth mentioning. Schrecker speaks in a thick New York accent. But to appreciate the lectures, I had to check my regionalist prejudices at the door. People who fixate on how she says it are bound to miss out.

Sep 13, Mike rated it liked it Recommends it for: What a strange time the era of McCarthyism must have been. On the one hand, you had conservatives, full of fear and hatred, demonizing and scapegoating a small minority group, using institutional power to destroy the lives and trample the civil rights of a group of mostly harmless people. On the other hand, you have liberals, displaying fundamental weakness, failing to stand up for persecuted groups, and laying down in the face of bullying.

I wonder what that was like? I sadly jest, of course. T What a strange time the era of McCarthyism must have been. The last few minutes of this lecture series deal with the question of "could it happen again"?

And of course it could. Some days it feels like it has never stopped happening in America, with hippies, Catholics it wasn't that long ago!

    See a Problem?

The most emotionally despicable aspect of McCarthyism is forcing people to betray their former friends and colleagues, seemingly for the fun of it on the part of the Red-baiters and commie hunters. Though these congressional witch hunts, which elevated unknowns like McCarthy and Nixon to national status, did find a few Soviet spies in the government, the damage they caused to the fabric of society was undoubtedly worse. Schrecker does a good job at examining this phenomenon from a number of different angles - there were rarely questions that I had that she didn't eventually answer.

One caveat is that her voice is extremely scratchy and hard to listen to - but I got used to it. Jul 27, Todd Martin rated it really liked it Shelves: In reality, communist activity in the US was always a marginal endeavor of the political fringe. Although there were certainly individuals who sold secrets to the Soviets, fears that communists would somehow instigate revolution and overthrow the government were simply the products of baseless hysteria.

This hysteria was a useful tool for those who could exploit it, and republicans ever deft to exploit fear and threats of anti-patriotism for political gain utilized McCarthyism and red-baiting as weapons of political suppression against left leaning organizations and unions.

All of which is proof that some aspects of history certainly repeats itself. Be the first to ask a question about The American Inquisition, Lists with This Book. Discusses the Republican Party push for loyalty commission in so as to gain in elections. Much of this took place under the Republican controlled 80th congress. In one case the gov't charged an individual with sedition but would not allow him to defend himself by proving the truth of what he said. Sep 03, David rated it it was amazing.
