This book was overly lengthy. It was draining and exhausting to read. It was packed with so much beneficial information, great advice, some wonderful self-help tips, etc. But was covered up by a tremendous amount of filler, repetitiveness, unimportant details, and bland information. It was more a choice trying to stay awake and stay interested in this book, then it would be to actually apply it to my life.

Don't get my wrong, Dr. If you have the patience which I don't then this book just might be a beneficial read to you!

Dr Phil, that famous TV psychologist, has written another self-help book, this time to assist in developing the self. Having a background in his field myself, I could always understand what he was talking about, but I don't think you need such a grounding to follow him - he translates nearly all of the jargon and most of his broader text into common American idiom.

Like his TV cases, this book is short and oversimplifies the work that is really necessary to change oneself for the better and for Dr Phil, that famous TV psychologist, has written another self-help book, this time to assist in developing the self. Like his TV cases, this book is short and oversimplifies the work that is really necessary to change oneself for the better and for good.

Nevertheless, I do applaud his efforts in making the general public, who are mostly naive to such things, more aware of psychological issues and some basic ways to develop their potential. I also like how he eats a piece of humble pie and acknowledges he's not perfect by explaining some of his own life lessons. This book explains some basic principles, and as such provides an introduction to some of the theories of applied psychology. It might also make a good companion to aid the understanding of somebody going through therapy. However, unlike its author, I wouldn't recommend it for a whole course of self-treatment.

Major life changes require real support from real people, not a paperback. I could not find the book that I have anywhere, and there is no bar code in it to scan it. It's hardcover and doesn't have a dust jacket, but it looks just like the one pictured here and says, "and companion" on it. Sure makes me curious where this book came from Anyway, on to my review. I did enjoy Self Matters, but like other reviewers, it was easy for me to see where Dr. Phil was going very early on. There are im The copy of Self Matters that I have also has the companion workbook included. There are important moments, choices and people in your life that have shaped who you are, and your sense of self very well could have gotten lost along the way.

In Self Matters, you explore these things and make peace with what needs to be handled.

You take a look at your past from a detailed view and figure out just how you may have lost yourself along the way. This isn't my favorite Dr. Phil book, and I think it's because some of the stories are really, really long. I did enjoy the advice and the look back on my life, and while a lot of the topics and terms have come up in other books, I liked how Dr. Like all of his books that have a workbook that goes with the original book, I recommend doing it all together.

You will get the most out of the program in that way. If you may have lost yourself or even a part of yourself, if you have things that need to be put to rest, or you are just curious to find out how you have been shaped over your life, Self Matters is a great place to start. Take the time to go through the program the way it's laid out - I did it like that and found it very enjoyable.
