The barrel tips forward, then gets turned backwards and around into the baseball. That should be the goal, many people think that the secret to hitting is in the hips, and how fast you can rotate. The truth is, all hitters rotate, but not all hitters match the bat path shown above. Notice how far the barrel moves before any rotation takes place. This early bat speed allows a hitter a running start. The barrel gets up to speed behind them, allowing them to simply carry that bat speed into the baseball.

To really understand this concept, you have to be able to do it. Tipping the bat allows a player to use momentum to his advantage, this does not require some super human level of forearm strength. Using momentum to your advantage actually requires less strength and effort. Hands stay at the shoulder. So many hitters are trying to push their hands away from their back shoulder and through the baseball.

There are several problems with that. When the hands stay at the shoulder, the kinetic chain is allowed to work. Creating energy that spirals from the ground, up. The hands and bat should be the very last thing to come forward. By keeping the hands at the shoulder through the swing, you have more control of the bat. Try holding any object away from your body, it instantly becomes heavier and harder to control.

By keeping the hands at the shoulder and tilting the shoulders to the baseball, everything can stay tight and powerful. Once the ball is hit, the hands can continue on a path towards the pitcher.

Ryan Braun is a great example of using a weight shift to his advantage. Braun is able to use the momentum of his body, falling towards the baseball and putting all of his energy into the swing. This should not be confused with hitting from your front foot. For now, I want you to notice how his weight is still centered over the back leg as he strides and falls forward.

This is very important and most hitters will miss this point. After you take a few rounds with a weighted bat, take normal rounds without the weight. You don't want to take too many rounds with the weighted bat, because you'll eventually train yourself to swing slower. Finally, take another few rounds swinging a lightweight fungo bat to get the feel of the bat flying through the zone.

The goal here is to train your muscles to swing faster and develop muscle memory for incredible bat speed. Have a partner feed balls to your front hip, simulating an inside pitch. This forces your hands to be quicker through the zone to catch up to the pitch. If you're using a pitching machine, angle it so the pitches come at your front hip. This can also be done using front toss by angling away from the feeder. Begin taking slow motion swings while a partner with hands on the barrel pushes against them.

This creates resistance through the zone. You'll feel it in your forearms. It's a good replacement for traditional forearm exercises like Wrist Curls, because it uses actual baseball movements. Once you follow through on your swing, return the barrel through the zone in reverse.

Watch it in action. Hold an eight- to pound medicine ball above your head with both hands. Continually slam the ball to the ground as hard as you can for a set number of repetitions or amount of time. After you do a set for 30 seconds, move to jump slams by adding simultaneous jumps as you slam the ball to the ground. Stand approximately five feet away from a wall in your batting stance.

Hold a medicine ball in your hands like a bat and face the wall as if it were the pitcher. Throw the ball off the wall by rotating your core, mimicking a swing. Perform a set of 10 repetitions or go for 30 seconds, then switch sides.
