The Career Bomb

For as long as I can remember, he's built circuits in the basement for his model train set. They're simple circuits, soldered together by hand on perforated boards and loosely held in black-and-metal boxes with switches and LEDs sticking out of them.

If Mohamed's project looked like a bomb, then my dad's basement looks like the lair of a master terrorist. My dad showed me how to solder with those sinister-looking parts. He showed me how power sources connect to circuits, the difference between AC and DC current, the need for resistance in a circuit to prevent shorts, and how you can take a handful of strange little pills on wires and turn them into a lamp, or a timer, or a train controller.

And these devices, while functional, were all homemade and ugly compared to what you can buy in stores. They had bare wires, with switches and lights screwed in by hands and components soldered in place with a soldering pen instead of tiny, clean squares of SMBs placed by machines. They looked like bombs as much as Mohamed's clock did. You learn about electronics by working with electronics, and that starts with tinkering.

It means building clocks out of kits. It means taking things apart to see how they work and eventually putting them together again in a way that's new. And, incidentally, I took many things apart as a kid, and wasn't nearly as successful as Mohamed at getting them to stay functional. Even if he just took an alarm clock out of its casing and put it in another casing a speculative claim that doesn't actually affect the justification or morality of his treatment , that's learning by doing.

And, frankly, if you know enough about electronics to denigrate a high school freshman for supposedly re-casing an alarm clock out here, we call that "modding" , you should know enough to look at a box of wires and lights with no explosive fuel and realize how foolish it is to assume it's a bomb, or even intended to look like a bomb. If we react rashly to every homemade device we're told looks scary, without bothering to understand and be able to identify things that are actually dangerous, how many kids will be too scared to tinker?

How many will be afraid to pick up a soldering iron and learn how to make brilliant things? How many future engineers and makers will be held back by fear of retribution itself based on fear? Useless Fear We need to be vigilant for actual threats, not for things that look like threats to the untrained eye. The more we overreact about wires in a box, the less attention we give to actual bombs, which generally don't flash, beep, tick, or resemble a cannonball with a fuse coming out of it.

Reacting with haste, suspicion, and ignorance to something that seems sinister does not make us safer.

It hurts us by holding back those who could have bright futures in engineering and improve our lives some day. If there is reasonable suspicion of a bomb, evacuating the building and calling in the proper authorities to identify and deal with the threat is a much more reasonable response than arresting a kid and questioning him without his parents.

The reaction to Mohamed's clock seemed less a response to a perceived bomb and more a response to a perceived bomb-maker.
