They are mostly used for longer distance commutes since they're faster, but take some more time to get ready and aren't very good for routes with frequent stops due to the high weight around 30kg. An added benefit is that they offer quite decent impact protection in case of a collision with other vehicles. Riding one takes some getting used to, mostly because you need to have a different awareness of traffic and your surroundings to drive defensively, since they may not always see you very easily think parked cars, hedges, Even without electric assist, a healthy non athletic person in relatively good shape can achieve and maintain speeds of above 40kph on flat terrain.

Riders of these wheels know some things about life that we, other mortals that is, can not comprehend. With a regular recumbent bicycle, since you lie down, you have lots of gains from aerodynamics due to lesser wind resistance.

A velomobile takes this up to eleven. Velomobiles are rated as regular bicycles in Belgium and follow bicycle rules always on the cycle path, and so on Velomobiles are equivalent to most bicycles in most respects, but since they have 3 wheels, they are allowed to ride on the bicycle lane. This means that they're free to ride on the road, even though there's a bicycle lane, so they can choose what's best for the situation.

Another difference is that they're not allowed to go the other way in one way streets where normal bicycles can one way street except for bicycles. Once this laying bike was infront of me i was sitting in the car this thing is so funny seen in Ghent. I don't even want to know how a persons body would look like after crashing with this thing. Actually, these seem to protect you very well in collisions.

Not as well as a car obviously, but there have been accidents where the velomobile was totaled and the driver got away with hardly any injuries, which wouldn't have been the case on an 'open' bicycle. I think a ligfiets in general is quite dangerous because of how low to the ground it is. As a driver, you can't see it when you look out you windows, you can't see it if there's parked cars or hedges, you can't see it when it's behind you.

The single most beneficial thing to traffic safety, regardless of vehicle, is predictability. Making clear what your intentions are and when and how you want to achieve them. But if the other traffic can not see you, they can not predict what you will do.

Well, having used both an upright and a recumbent for commuting to work, I have the feeling that recumbents are actually slightly safer as long as you drive defensively. Both parked cars between the road and the bike lane and hedges are the most annoying things indeed. Whenever I come out from behind a row of parked cars and may cross the path of other traffic, I slow down and make sure it's safe. With hedges it's usually enough to sit upright for a few seconds my recumbent allows that because the handlebars aren't fixed but instead mounted on a hinge to see and be seen.

Eye contact is key! In all other situations your chances of being seen are as small as in any other kind of bicycle. I've been in countless situations where drivers in their cars didn't see me, because they don't look out. Some don't even look at the bike lane until their car is almost on top of it, so in any situation other than parked cars and hedges, my experience is that there's hardly any difference in visibility. In a lot of situations mainly where the speed limit is 50kph or lower where there are hedges or rows of parked cars, the best place for velomobiles enclosed recumbents is actually on the road.

After all this, why do I think a recumbent is slightly safer? Well, in case you do have a collision, you fall from a greater height on an upright, and you tend to fly forward head first, leading to more serious injuries. With a recumbent, your feet are first, so you're more likely to break your legs than your cranium. On top of that, most recumbents stop ridiculously fast, because you don't have to worry about braking too hard with the front wheel.

It's funny how I never hear anybody complain about how hard it is to see a Lamborghini or other low sports car, even though they're about the same height as a velomobile. In places where there's bad visibility on the bike path, velomobiles can always ride on the road. Whether that's a good idea or not depends on the situation.

  • Unfortunately, because of a case of TV Never Lies , people sometimes do this in Real Life , thinking 1 it is the correct way to test a microphone or 2 that it hasn't been tested already. Not only is it wrong, it's unnecessary. The audio team will probably have already spoken into the microphone while setting up the sound system before the audience arrives, and definitely before the speaker arrives on stage. Despite this fact, all forms of media still use this trope, misleading the common people to think that it is necessary to check the mic this way before speaking.
