The large cave at Smoo near Durness is also worth a visit. The Assynt area is well provided with low level walks for all abilities. The path to Ardroe and Achmelvich from near Glendarroch is also a favourite. Further afield the walk in to the evocative and lonely Sandwood Bay, near Kinlochbervie, is an experience that will always be remembered. Nine hole courses are available at Ullapool and Durness. The famous Royal Dornoch course is 60 miles away on the east coast and there are excellent courses at Tain and Brora as well.

With its tranquility, panoramic view and comforts, Glendarroch House provides a perfect haven to relax in. Our first visit and best accommodation ever…. A fantastic haven in an unbeatable location H London, England. Our 15th visit since ! The Laid Bothy is beautiful and has everything you need for a great stay and for exploring the North West of Scotland! The views are spectacular! Hope to return soon! Incredibly well-equipped and beautifully converted byre in a great location - inside you feel cosy and private, though you're on a working croft and the owners might walk past the windows occasionally We came to Laid Bothie late at Night or rather early Morning since our flight came in late and it is quite a drive to the remote Highlands!

Vanessa and David had prepared everything well! They put up a sign at the road otherwise we would have never found it and left all the lights in the Bothie on. Entering the Bothie we were speechless! What an incredible, beautyful ,cozy, well equipped little vacation home! We felt home in a minute! Since Vanessa had told me, that the little Supermarket in Drumbeg delivers food, and we were also profited with Laid eggs, we had a wonderful breakfast and were breathtaken by the view!

We had a very warm welcome by Vanessa and David and after we picked up our boys at Cape Wrath they did the trail they were shown a campsite where they could built up their tent! Vanessa was very helpful and never tired to explain the area and things we might be interested in my husband being a birdwatcher.

Buncrana Shore Path, Buncrana, Donegal, Ireland | Donegal Self Catering

She offered the boys their Kajaks and we had an very nice sociable evening with her David unfortunately went away the day we arrived. We cooked for ourself, which was no problem in this super equipped kitchen. And if something was missing - Vanessa organized it immediately. The cottage is very remote, quiet and in an stunning area. Just the right place to relax and get away from stress and our loud world! Unfortunately we had only 4 days there, but for sure we will return!

It almost hurt returning to civilization. Lovely comfortable place to stay in, or return to from excursions with beautiful views and everything convenient. The place was spacious and well equipped. The kitchen provided everything to prepare meals plus a very welcome washing machine and dryer. The living room and bedroom were comfortable and relaxing. The house was near shops and restaurants and offered wonderful views. David and Angie were really helpful and accommodating and made check in really easy.

The house has everything you need for a stay and was warm and very clean. As I say, though, the space was very well maintained. This accommodation isn't fancy but is very clean and has everything you might need. Excellent location and a friendly host. We would recommend staying here. The Boat House is at an interesting location by Lochinver's harbour.

It is next door to Peet's Restaurant and a hotel and a short walk from the shops. It was a good location for walks up the river Inver and to Suilven. The house had a spacious bedroom and living room and a well-equipped kitchen. We enjoyed our stay. This property is a good stop over if you are exploring the local area.

There is also a little cafe 2 mins away at the bunkhouse just across the way. We had a lovely two nights stay here. This is a nice place to stay when doing NC tour. The information Anna gave us is accurate, and the place have everything we can think of. The communication with Anna is really smooth, and she is very helpful and sweet. She prepared some snacks for us cause she's afraid it's inconvenient for us to grab food around here, which made out stay here so easy. Anna greeted us and gave us necessary info we wanted regarding restaurants which turned out to be good recommendations.

There was a good selection left out for breakfast. A very well equipped apartment in delightful village Flat was comfortable and well appointed. Fully equipped and excellent, full cooking facilities. Perfectly positioned in the harbour with an OK bar on one side and one of the best restaurants on the other. There are a few flights of stairs to access the flat.

It wasn't a problem for us but folks should be aware there's no lift. Great place to stay! Close to everything well heated and very cosy. It had very much extra services we didnt expect and really helped out after a long journey! The guest house is right in the center of Lochinver and our room had a sea view. The breakfast was tasty. Everything was very clean.

If you're tall and avoid footboards, the one on our double bed was higher than it looked in the photo and caused some grumbling from my 6'3" husband. Overall, we had a pleasant stay. Very kind reception and breakfast service. We had an amazing week staying in Williams spacious yet cosy bungalow which was perfect for our family of 5.

The location right next to Clachtoll Beach was paradise and with temperatures in the high twenties all week! We were made to feel very welcome - thanks William! A lovely bungalow-very well equipped and fantastic location. A perfect base for our family of 5. We definitely recommend it!! A fantastic place to stay, only a short walk to Clachtoll beach and a quick jaunt to a variety of different walking routes.

The location is ideal without being too remote Lochinver is just down the road for fuel and supplies and offers incredible peace when you're there. The bungalow itself is very cosy, and you can get it really warm if you need it! There's everything you need for cooking and sleeping well too. We had a great time and William was a very helpful host. We'll hopefully be back in the summer having loved it so much. William made us very welcome from the moment we arrived. He was friendly talkative and unobtrusive but did everything you would expect to make us comfortable for our stay.

The bungalow is immaculately presented and is great value for money. Clachtoll is as magical as i had remembered and we would definitely stay again. The Lochinver area is an ideal location for beauty and a variety of activities, and William's house is a great place to stay. It is a few miles outside Lochinver, on a pretty road, right near the beach and several hiking trains. The house was comfortable, and had everything needed for a pleasant stay. William was very friendly and helpful, and communicated with us as needed.

Excellent location, next to clachtoll beach! Charming decor and extremely comfortable. The log fire made the nights extremely cozy. We can't recommend this place highly enough! Compact, clean, beautifully decorated and with the most fabulous view of Suilven. Thank you Eilidh for letting us stay. May and Neville Chipulina. A lovely wee hoose set in lovely gardens. Hosts were magic- friendly, super helpful and on hand for advice. Nice of you to organise some seals in the bay too ;- highly recommend!

Great place, cozy and well furnitured flat. I loved to be there. Sitting on the terrace and looking on to the beautiful Suilven. What a delightful gem in Lochinver. Eilidh and family were warm and welcoming hosts and the accommodation just perfect. Beautifully presented, comfortable and well equipped cosy accommodation. The chocolate mint brownies on our arrival were delicious.

Ard Na Long is situated in a quite area, it has its own decking area with a fabulous outlook direct to the sea and yet is in walking distance of the local pub and the fabulous Pie shop. We had a brilliant stay: The property was spotless and comfortable. It's a wonderful part of the world. Great accommodation in an amazing location. We really enjoyed sitting on the patio area and looking out at the garden, shore and local wildlife, plus across the bay to Lochinver and Suilven. The rooms were comfortable, well equipped and spotless, and we loved the homely touch from fresh flowers and home cooked cakes.

With a gentle walk into the village to shop and eat, and lots of amazing places to explore within a short drive, this was a great base for a few days holiday, and Eilidh and Linda made us feel really welcome. This is a great place to stay if you want to get away from city life for a short break.

Although the accommodation is quite small it has all of the necessities and the view from the private decking looking over to Lochinver and Suilven is amazing. Lochinver is only 15 minutes walk away and there are plenty of places of interest within an hours drive. Warm and cosy apartment with a lovely view. We appreciated the flowers and chocolates on arrival. Easy walk into Lochinver for restaurants and shops.

We enjoyed our stay here despite the challenging weather! Claire is amazing host, she respond to all of our questions fast. House is nice and cosy, with amazing view on the bay few times we saw seals. Great location with beautiful Achmelvich Bay few miles away. While eating breakfast in the conservatory you might have a surprise visit from local deers: As well you've got a local shop 5 minutes away, petrol station, and a small playground by the coast.

You can find as well few restaurants and cafes. My friends and I had a pleasant stay here during my mapping project. House was clean and in a fantastic location to explore the region. We really enjoyed our stay in Lochinver. It is a perfect little town with everything you need Spar for groceries, a nice butcher shop, a few pubs, excellent pie shop, and good restaurants and was perfectly located for hiking and seeing the beautiful coastline and Assynt. We could walk to everything in the town. There is a steep climb up the steps for one of the bedrooms, but we got used to that.

We saw deer right out the back gate. Claire had a binder with some good info on local sights and restaurants. Lochinver was one our favorite spots in Scotland! We really enjoyed our stay at No. Great location, comfortable stay and exactly what we were looking for when staying in Lochinver for our friends wedding. Lovely little house in an idyllic area. The house is warm and cosy and has all you would want for a holiday home.

The views are amazing and expect occasional visits from the local wildlife which are charming to watch. Would definitely recommend staying there and will hopefully be returning soon. The lodge was a perfect base for a walking holiday with 3 friends. It had everything we needed and more.

The beds were super comfortable and the upstairs lounge was perfect. I would highly recommend the lodge for a self catered break in the Highlands! We stayed only three nights at Elaine's very cozy, quiet and well equipped lodge close to a little cove. There was everything we needed and Elaine was a great and very caring host with helpful recommendations. Comfy bed made us sleep very well and we enjoyed our daily walk at sunset along the cove, watching sheep, deers and birds. The lodge is provided with lots of information about the surrounding and was a perfect place to explore the beautiful part of Scotland.

We had a wonderful stay and can highly recommend the place. My family and I stayed at the Lodge for three days. After a lengthy drive we couldn't have been more happy with the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the lodge and after a long, gruelling drive, we we're delighted to have immediate access to the property. It's very well equipped, spotlessly clean with stunning views of Inverkirkaig Bay and surrounding hills.

This is without doubt one of the most beautiful unspoilt areas of outstanding beauty the country has to offer. Elaine was the perfect host and even went to the effort of checking we were home and safe after a failed attempt of climbing the Suilven - our batteries were soon recharged after a delicious seafood meal at Peet's Restaurant located in nearby Lochinver. If you're thinking of visiting this special part of Scotland, we would recommend the lodge, as it's perfectly located and so welcoming. We're looking forward to revisiting again for a longer stay. Thanks very much Elaine, it was great!

A lovely house, set in a really nice location just miles from Lochinver. Fantastically well equipped and in a quiet and picturesque setting, with great hiking close by.

Loads of useful info provided. Spotlessly clean with all the facilities you need such as wifi, washing machine and excellent heating and hot water! We hope to stay again at some point in the near future! We stayed at the Lodge for three nights and we wished we could have stayed longer. The house is extremely well equipped and makes you feel at home at once. From the living room upstairs you get a beautiful view on the sea shore as well as on the mountains. Inverkirkaig itself is very small and remote and ideal if you wish to be in the nature and the beautiful scenery of the highlands.

Groceries and pertrol can be bought in Lochinver, just 10 minutes by car. Elaine and Charlie were great hosts. We had access to the lodge as soon as we arrived and they came by to explain everything. We loved our stay and would recommend it to anybody! Robert is super nice, warm and funny un the morning breakfast which was complete and with nice views. On the other side, the bathroom was cold, the shower wasn't very hot and there was low pressure. Location panoramica, camere pulite e fornite di ogni confort anche se non grandissime, Colazione buona ed abbondante, preparata e servita al momento da personale simpatico e gentilissimo.

Brilliant location, outstanding hosts. Came to meet us and ask about our stay even in a downpour. Very comfortable, cosy and tidy caravans located very close to the beach off the beaten track. Stayed with my family of 4 and the caravans were the perfect size and we had a great time.

Would definitely recommend and stay here again. The green cruachan has everything that a guesthouse needs to spend some quality time. The breakfast was lovely and Edwin and Irma were really friendly hosts, very welcoming and they gave us very useful tipps.

Lochinver to Achmelvich

He was very friendly and his place was cosy and comfortable. We enjoyed playing scrabble in the guest lounge. We hope to visit again soon! A beautiful cottage in an absolutely stunning location! The cottage is very well equipped, tidy and spacious although I was there on my own. Really gorgeous views, will hopefully return at some point!

Thistle cottage is definitely a superb accomodation to dive into the Western Highlands. The location is very good to set up your base camp to explore the hills in Assynt, with Lochinver nearby. The cottage is cosily furnished with a great view on the sea. The kitchen is luxery, very well equiped with all you need to cook your own meals.

What a magical place! The Split Rock Croft House stays in an exclusive peninsula metres away from the sea. We visited the place in a party of five and had all the comfort and relaxation we could ask for. The house was well-equipped and spotless clean. Very good location to chill and visit the beaches nearby. My only regret is not having stayed longer.

What a great and welcoming house and the views are second to none. From the beginning we felt right at home, everything was clean and tidy and Helen and Graham are great hosts who care about you. The weather also helped to make our stay very enjoyable, we had sunshine for the whole 3 days we stayed there.

The location was awesome and very, very peaceful - exactly what we were looking for. Highly recommended if you seek the solitude and a luxury home away from home. Utterly fantastic, love love loved this gorgeous place. Hands down our favorite place in Scotland! Off the main road from Ullapool to Lochinver, a 6 mile single track leads to the hidden treasure of Clachtoll, with its scattering of crofts and fisherman's cottages overlooking the summer isles and the wild atlantic. Our stay in this special place was everything we hoped for and more. Three sandy beaches were a 1, 3 and 5 minute walk from the garden.

Sea views and reflections of the water could be viewed all around the house.

Buncrana Shore Path

Regular wanderings across the land to our nearest beach - carved so close to our garden gate it was almost within touching distance - were shared with little piglets, highland cows and sheep. Undulating fields, like elemental furrows above the cliffs, seemed to mimic the rolling waves below, as if frozen into form during a sudden ice storm. A short walk away, we discovered an old salmon fishing station, which overlooks the biblical 'clachtoll', a slab of sloping rock, split in two by forces of nature and defiant against its descent into the sea.

A wander along the boardwalk leads back to Flossie's Beach Store and warming mugs of real coffee. A short drive away, the Clachtoll road leads to the simple amenities of Lochinver, or onto another single track, revealing the pristine beach at Achmelvich. Heading in the other direction, the back road to Kylesku is an unnerving drive through rocky moorland, beyond the sweeping sands and open atlantic at Clashnessie. Back in our luxurious home-from-home, our crofting hosts provided an abundance of logs for the wood burner, home-grown vegetables - parsnips, carrots, onions, cabbage - and the freshest eggs from their own hens.

So, we were easily inspired to cook and bake in the fabulously equipped kitchen, before dining overlooking panoramic sea views, then curling up with a wee dram in front of the cosy fire. When we fancied a no-cook night, the obvious choice was a selection of the much celebrated pies from Lochinver Larder.

Our hosts also organised local, creel-caught prawns from Lochinver boat 'The Fortitude' too - a memorable, scrumptious final holiday supper. This is a place for wandering, pondering, reading, beachcombing, favourite films, evocative soundtracks, feasting, hot chocolates and drams. Mostly though, it's for curling up by open french windows, watching and listening to the ever changing moods of the atlantic ocean; then, as the sun descends, looking upwards to find that darkness has revealed a new moon and bright constellations scattered across the western sky.

Clean, tidy, and modern. Brilliant wee sandy beach right at your doorstep. Hard to find the property in the dark so plan your arrival during daylight hours. Would definitely stay there again. Lovely very well equipped house with such friendly, helpful hosts. Situated on a perfect little beach with many other beaches very close and great views. Perfect place for a honeymoon! Helen and Graham are very welcoming, accomodating and accessible. The photos don't do justice to the beauty of this spot. The reality surpasses them tenfold. Try a massage with Helen It was hard to leave.

We had a brilliant holiday at Stoer Villa. The location is brilliant - genuinely remote, but with amazing beaches, restaurants, and even an amazing professional masseuse who came to the house and turned the living room into a spa for the evening! The kitchen is particularly well equipped, and really excellent for people who enjoy cooking on holiday. The villa was exactly as described. In a lovely, isolated location near some fantastic beaches. The kitchen was very well equipped with everything you would need and the place was very cosy and warm.

A great base to explore the beautiful area. We had a great New Year's stay with family and we will definitely be back again soon! This is a great house for a family or group holiday, lots of bed space, shower rooms though no bath and public rooms to relax. The decor is a mixture of modern, traditional and ethnic and v comfortable. Stoer Villa is nicely situated to explore the area and in walking distance of a small shop that seems to stock everything, two beaches and a broch.

Our experience at Rhett's was lovely. The house surpassed our expectations, accomodating 8 very comfortably, the kitchen was amazingly equipped, the location was nested in a quiet village and we would wake up to viewing lambs feeding in the surroundings. Very peaceful and well integrated in the Highlands unique scenery. Rhett had a neighbour available to help and Bill was extremely friendly and helpful. Thanks Rhett and Bill for the memorable stay! We definetly recommend it for family and friends.

We cannot recommend Stoer Villa highly enough to anyone looking for a holiday rental in Assynt.

Create route

The location was perfect - it's a few miles up the single track road from Lochinver, and we felt it was a great balance between convenience and isolation. Seeing a vivid Aurora towards the end of our stay made us glad to be away from all light pollution, and the coast path you can walk straight from the house has great views to the outer Isles and inland to the Assynt peaks.

Rhett has decorated each room very tastefully, with influences from different cultures. The house is locally managed by Bill, who was very helpful in carrying out a sick sheep that parked itself in the back garden. We all felt like very urban people after that! The stove, large TV, fast internet and multitude of books and games ensured we had plenty to do in the evenings and in poor weather and we never felt cramped we had between 4 and 8 people in the house during our 2 week stay.

The kitchen is unusually well-stocked we were able to make the top tier of a wedding cake , with two fridges and more than enough cutlery and crockery. Stoer Villa had everything we needed to make the most of a fortnight in the most beautiful part of the British Isles. Rhett is an excellent host and his helpers in the village of Stoer made us feel welcome and ensured we had everything we needed.

The house is warm, comfortable and well-equipped. For a dfamily of five two adults and three children aged from 12 to 17 it seemed very spacious. The villa is an excellent base for visits to the white-sand beaches of Clachtoll where you can explore the remains of the iron-age broch of An Dun and Achmelvich, as well as visits to Stoer Lighthouse, the Old Man of Stoer a famous sea stack and the superb seafood restaurant at the Kylesku Hotel. We had a super time in front of the fire place at night. Nice to have a place with lots of room for a change. I would recommend it. Small house in the centre of Lochinver.

Great view to the bay from 1. Perfect for 4 persons. We stayed there for 9 nights. A lot of possibilities for walking in the region. Great cottage, fantastic location, lots of things to do in the area. We stayed 10days with a family of four and had absolutely no problems of filling our days. There are great walks, fabulous beaches and lots if seals to see. There is a good convienence store in the same street with a good array of goods. We saw a porpoise in the bay just in front of the house , how good can it get?! As I arrived very late for a one night stay, I did not have the chance to wander around the acres property but my experience at Olive's was faultless.

Both her and her husband were really nice. The place, right between Clashnessie and Drumbeg has a lot of natural adventures to offer. Tom and Olive also operates several outdoors activities which might interest you in the area. Make sure you go over their website to see what they have to offer. I already recommended them to other travelers going their way on NC If you want peace, serenity, comfort, amazing wildlife and friendly pleasant hosts, then look no further.

Olive's house is new, clean and comfortable. Olive's husband is kind enough to help me out in fixing my car's tyre. I recommend this place. Olive and Tom were really friendly and helpful from the moment I arrived. A great breakfast to start the day with an amazing view from the dining table. The room was compact but comfortable and everywhere was clean and tidy.

John Lent is an academic, essayist, poet, short story writer and musician. His work is marked by a mixing of genres that aims to produce a literary equivalent of jazz music. Lent also draws on art especially the Impressionists and has been influenced by the pioneering work of Joseph Frank in spatial form. A Rock Solid plays off the various senses of the term rock: Wood Lake Music continues the emphasis on landscape , but a greater sense of mood is evoked.

Reviews of Frieze have been positive. The stress of his rhythms is clearly on the banal, rather than on the sensational [ The Face in the Garden explores subjectivity by using prose and poetry to refer to external and internal states of consciousness. On the one hand it presents his first published stories; while, on the other, it consolidates his accomplishments as a poet.

Reviews of this experimental book range from the journalistic boorishness of John Moore [12] to academic criticism. Monet's Garden is a discontinuous narrative of asymmetrical structure — an interweaving of connected stories with elliptical , interconnected pieces on the narrator of the book. The injection of a jazzy structure forcefully creates a three-dimensional literary space, perhaps at the expense of character, while in Black Horses, Cobalt Suns and Home a poetic broadsheet , , the poet opens out to societal concerns.
