The scandal was enormous, and the success even bigger. More than the sexual content of the novel, what was shocking then and stays exciting now is that all of what Victor Marguerite describes takes place among the elite of French society: Victor Marguerite eloquently denounces the double standard women are victims of, the hypocrisy of a male dominated and catholic society, the absurdities of the social and moral codes women are supposed to follow. His defense of the right for a woman to be a free sexual being, just as any man, is to this day ferociously enjoyable.
Of course, Victor Marguerite, despite all his progressive views, is still a man of his era: One senses that Marguerite admires women such as Monique, and applauds them for daring to challenge conventions, but that, at the same time, he feels that their quest for freedom and equality means a lot of unhappiness.

The culprit, in his eyes, is a rigid society that, instead of helping women being held to the same standard as men, pushes them either to be submissive and objectified, either to rebel and therefore wander in the margins. The writing is sometimes vivid and efficient, sometimes terribly overblown. The intrigue is naively melodramatic as some silent movies can be: Victor Marguerite knew how to push buttons and how to titillate the reader of the Twenties, but his anger and his accusations ring very true and, sadly, the issues he writes about remain, almost years later, still relevant.

May 21, Emily added it Shelves: I'm reading this because it was THE scandal novel of the s and I want to incorporate it into teaching modern France this summer. I have a bit of a penchant for vintage shockers like Elinor Glyn, in part because now they seem so tame. If the history of France interests you, this one is pretty important to read. It was widely read and discussed and gets cited in pretty much ever gender book on the s there is.
