As a reader you get to know them all really well. It is still running in London and has been since ! Perhaps the second best known is The Witness for the Prosecution , which also became a popular movie. Many would argue this is the best place for you to start, a good introduction to the author and her most famous detective.

She starts off strong and surefooted. A particularly impressive denouement where Poirot uses some unusual theatrics. Hastings narrates, which is always a bonus. This one takes a Rashomon-style approach, with Poirot investigating a cold case and all five suspects writing up their own version of events.

I actually got one twist here, but I missed the second one. With a limited cast of characters and a very clear chain of events, this is one of her simplest and most rewarding plots. Like many Miss Marple books, this features her only as a secondary character near the end of the book. But this novel, where the plot revolves around a town in scandal over poison pen letters, has a batch of quirky and memorable characters, including an extra charming injured pilot narrator.

I also recommend reading A Caribbean Mystery and Nemesis in a row, especially since the latter refers to events of the former quite often. Instead of being a secondary character, here Miss Marple is front and center. It gives me a major case of the shivers. But if you start out with Christie and realize you really enjoy her books, reading in order of publication is just about as rewarding a reading experience as you can get. In Grand Ravine and the neighbouring slum of Martissant, opposing gangs made peace during a 19 March football match sponsored by the UN.

But the truce did not last long. On one side was a gang based in Grand Ravine associated with Aristide's Lavalas party. On the other were two allied gangs in neighbouring slums, one based in an area called Ti Bwa, while the second was opposed to Aristide and called the Little Machete Army.

The latter earned its name at another football match in Martissant in August that ended in bloodshed when police officers began shooting in the stadium and the machete-wielding gang hacked to death the fleeing spectators. What remains a mystery is what provoked these gangs to murder more than 20 innocent people. Haitian police chief Mario Andresol suspects the attack is related to the killings at last year's football match, which appeared to be a joint effort by the Little Machete Army, backed by rogue police officers, to eliminate the Grand Ravine gang.

Andresol arrested 15 police officers for their alleged participation in the stadium killings, but the judge handling the case has since released most of them, including two senior officers, Renan Etienne and Carlo Lochard.

Andresol was confirmed by the senate to continue his term as police chief the day before the massacre occurred, leading some observers to speculate that the killings represented a warning to him. Since the massacre, Sri Lankan peacekeepers have so far managed to ward off more violence. Now his career path is set and he writes things on occasion. He worked within the flourishing small press industry at first, submitting to horror anthologies left and right, writing like a madman.

After that he broke away and while still writes shorter work, concentrates more on the longer. His writing remains dark most of the time, but of late has found that his longer works err more into dark noir.
