Lathems Lament

At the end of his life, Ferguson underwent experimental surgery to replace his damaged corneas enabling him to finally see the windows he and his sons had created. I strongly wanted to show that Australia was culturally mature enough to have its own music that could replace the Benjamin Britten War Requiem — the masterwork that is most commonly performed at events honouring the Australians who died there.

It involved travelling to France to perform scale versions of the commissioned works on the battlefields to mark their centenaries, just as we had done with the Gallipoli Symphony.

The risk with all such projects is that one can end up glorifying war — clearly war is the true enemy which we must defeat through peace. Only by being there, and experiencing first-hand the overwhelming echo of those events could I be sure that we would tell the truth of what happened and create something valid that could represent all those who were killed or damaged. Ross Edwards, whose Lux Aeterna is the climax of the work , has always wanted his music to act as an agent of healing and ritual — its age-old universal function. I hope this requiem will enable the release and healing of a long buried trauma.

The least we can do for the dead now, a century later, is to play them our finest songs. All bar one of the composers will be in Canberra for the performance and will give a free joint seminar at the ANU the day before. Pets in Victorian paintings — Egham, Surrey. There was a discernible sense that he was about to say something that could well see him hit with another defamation lawsuit, it was just the small matter of him filling in the details. And yet, he ploughed on. But, of course, these needless personal attacks undermine what are often complex ideas and arguments. But this was the first serious thing said and it came 45 minutes into the session.

With five minutes remaining, Latham made some effort to talk about the benefits of former politicians going into the media, but he got sidetracked even from that and ended up ranting about Sky News. The final irony came from the armchair psychologists online, warning observers to tread lightly amid speculation Mark Latham likely has a serious mental illness. These are the kind of pronouncements he himself hates; the kind of thinking that he believes impedes progressive ideas and debate, and yet here they were being employed ostensibly to protect him.

Too much middle-class welfare is unfair.

Lathem's Lament

Social, cultural and political exclusion are unfair by their very nature, as is too much centralisation and concentration of power whether local or global. Collective bargaining is a right not a privilege.

Global climate change will be bad for us all, but particularly for the world's poor". Both directly and indirectly fairness can contribute to productivity.

Among other things social democracy is about ensuring that the burdens and benefits of necessary economic and technological change are shared throughout the community. It was good in itself and helped ease the way for economic reform.

These proved to be powerful and effective messages in the build up to the election. To what extent, then, was the strategy applied in government? We've seen progress on workplace justice, a more rational mix of tax and expenditure, and reform in Commonwealth-State relations. Sadly a continuing addiction to Commonwealth power and vertical fiscal imbalance has limited enthusiasm for the last item on my list. More attention to federal realities would certainly have helped when planning more revenue from the booming resource sector.

A Labor Lament

In relation to the long-haul issues progress has been made on health reform, education and research have been given more emphasis and more coherence is being brought to the effort to tackle social exclusion. However, in response to more boat arrivals they changed tack on asylum seekers and post-Iraq have been pushing Australia even closer to the US.

This has meant that Kevin Rudd's call for reform in the political architecture for the Asia-Pacific hasn't generated support. If we want our neighbours to think and act beyond their traditional interests for example West versus East and China versus India we would need to practise what we preach and take up the role of honest broker rather than deputy sheriff.

All governments mix their messages to some extent — but some more than others and some in ways that are more significant than others. Distrust among voters can be a reason for unpopularity and, as experience teaches us, government needs to be about conviction as well as politics - not one or the other. Strategy in government needs to be based on good political judgment and can't be inflexible if events require it but does need to be applied with a high degree of consistency if the electors are to be kept on board, even when they disagree with some areas of policy.
