Considering the neon-covered exterior and old-school name, the atmosphere inside Brooklyn Diner is surprisingly fancy—after all, it's helmed by the award-winning Chef de Oliveira. That said, classic meals are definitely the standouts: Expect a short wait if you forget to make a reservation.

There are two locations in Midtown, on 57th and 43rd. Between bright, floral laminate booths, a wall full of shiny Mexican milagros, and a permanent crowd, the interior of El Centro is dizzying in the best possible way. It's perfect for a quick, casual night out with friends.

Esca the name means "bait" in Italian is Mario Batali and Dave Pasternack's take on classic Italian seafood; the menu is full of inventive and unusual crudos and amazing shrimp and shellfish pasta dishes. Sit in one of the pillowy nooks near the window and exult in dishes like charred broccolini in a creamy yogurt-cashew emulsion, broth-bathed hake flaky, delicate, a tidal wave of flavor , and cardamom-coriander Szechuan-style duck with a side of fermented sour cherry relish to remind you of all that is right in the world.

Flora Bar is the opposite from the sterile, often mediocre restaurants that are typical at many of the big museums. The space itself is striking: The menu is a mix of Japanese- and Spanish-influenced tapas, like scallop crudo with Asian pear and ramps, snow crab with miso mayonnaise, and lamb ribs with yogurt and mojo verde a mixture of garlic, cumin, cilantro, and olive oil.

Over the years it lost a lot of its luster due to poor management, until it got a desperately-needed facelift in Since then, it's consistently topped the list of the city's best seafood spots—as it's name suggests, the oysters are particularly epic. Elegant and old-school—bright lights, crisp white linens, and formal Italian waiters in white jackets and ties—Il Gattopardo feels more like Milan than Midtown. The lemon sorbet is always a nice way to wrap up the meal.

The noodles are hand-pulled on-site and cooked perfectly al dente. They're known for the super-flavorful tomkotso version, but we love the Miso Ramen and pork-free Wasabi Shoyu.

The other location is in the East Village. His new restaurant at 1 Hotel Central Park resurrects the name of his first-ever New York operation, and brings that same seasonal cuisine to a spacious corner space with simple, Scandinavian-style design. Le Bernardin opened in after the success of the storied Parisian original. Helmed by Chef Eric Ripert, this swanky restaurant continues to deliver some of the finest, freshest fish in the city, served with delicate yet complicated sauces that make seafood incredibly exciting. The private room here is upstairs and has a separate entrance.

Served in a very Chang-like communal style, the breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus all have that same Asian-inflected American classic vibe. As to be expected from the Momofuku family, a seat can be pretty hard to come by at peak hours, but unlike some of the other Momofukus downtown , they do take reservations.

The Midtown Guide

Marea serves impeccable Italian seafood in an elegant, grown-up space with large round tables, grey and beige leather chairs, and a stunning book-matched Egyptian alabaster bar with cage-wire stools, which complements the simple formality of the dining room. This is one of the few places that still takes it slow: An average meal takes two to three hours, but not in a painful, drawn out way.

They have one of the most extensive crudo menus out there and they are all innovative, refreshing, and delicious. We also love the homemade seafood-focused pastas they were doing the sea urchin thing way before it was hip. Though not particularly splashy or trendy, Marseille has been a Hell's Kitchen linchpin for years—in fact, it's probably the best post-show dinner spot in the district.

The menu is traditional Mediterranean—a nice mix of proteins, veggies, and grains—and as is customary to eateries around these parts, there's an excellent prix fixe option, which can be ordered pre- or post-show. Get the hummus and the octopus. This Greek seafood mecca launched the whole fish trend in NYC, and still does it to perfection.
