Sir Frederick Tanah-Chook wrote: Perhaps this was meant for young adults, or because I am a born and bred NYer, but this was just stupid. I finished it because I kept thinking the story would come to some conclusion that made sense, but no, that never happened. I honestly don't know where all these good reviews came from.

But since I am in the minority here, and the book didn't cost anything I would have been miffed if I spent even 99 cents on it , try it. It could just be my inability to pretend that something like the story in this could ever happen. It was total fantasy, and not a very good one.

Rats on Strings

I know plenty of people who work those 80 to weeks in law firms, and although it is pretty awful, it is not like he described in the book. Waste of my time. Because this novel feels like the author had a neat idea, then wrote as much as possible for a month. It sort of meandered, like a sitcom plot might, with a loosely connect theme, but no major plot arc.

I found myself wondering, how does this dream really contribute to the plot? I still don't know. I also didn't find this novel funny.

I'm not sorry I read it, but I would not recommend it, and I am not inclined to read more books by this author. With that said, I apologize for the 4 stars I gave this singular book. If "Night Circus" my favorite for this year is a 5 - then Rats on Strings is a 4. It was a very, enjoyable 4 though.

Characters are interesting, the plot is a hoot and a half and the writing is beautifully spare. One person found this helpful.

Welcome to Reddit,

It is not very often I hate a book like I did this one. I kept wanting to stop reading it, but moved forward waiting for it to get better.

See a Problem?

It never did and I will never get those wasted hours back in my life! Don't waste your time or money!

This book is funny, quirky, and about as different from any fiction I've read as I can imagine. The pace is fast and the book is hard to put down. It's also a good introduction to New York City! I would recommend it to anyone.
