The next level class is a Second, and the nobles and Royals are Firsts. Talia is a member of a rebel group who plan to kill the emperor and the ruling family.

As luck would have it, she is selected as the "token" Eliza Doolittle third who is taken to the palace in the White City to live with the Royals. She has fallen in love with one prince and ends up engaged to the other prince who will become Emperor. All the while, Talia is to awake the rebel leaders instructions to fulfill the mission of assassinating the emperial family.

Along the way, we learn twists and turns in the plot, including the true nature of Talia's existence, time travel and the dark arts. Gripping read and I look forward to the next book in the White City series. Nov 16, Avni Gupta rated it did not like it.

I had such a hard time getting into the writing and connecting with the characters- I thought that Natalia was really whiney and I had such a hard time rooting for her in anything. I may try to restart this book again later, but I'm not very hopeful I'm going to like it more my second time around. Very different This book kept me on my toes.
