Macbeth (The New Cambridge Shakespeare)

Macbeth (New Cambridge Shakespeare) (2E) - Books and Beyond

He analyzes Macbeth'ssocial and political meanings, Shakespeare's literary devices, the differentways the play has been performed from Shakespeare's time to our own, andprovides a line-by-line commentary on the play. Middleton, who was 16 years younger than Shakespeare, later became ahighly respected dramatist who is regarded today as perhaps the secondbest dramatist of his era, after Shakespeare, Braunmuller said. Middleton'schanges made the play more spectacular and more theatrical, added Braunmuller, who does not believe Middleton's revisions diminish the play.

In addition to being an outstanding playwright, Shakespeare was alsoa businessman -- part owner of a theater -- who wanted paying customersto fill the theater. He knew plays were revised and did not insist on faithfulinterpretations of his plays, Braunmuller said.

Braunmuller believes that Middleton's changes to Macbeth occurred duringShakespeare's lifetime, probably after he retired. None of Shakespeare'smanuscripts has survived -- he apparently made no effort to preserve hiswork -- and it is now "impossible to disentangle, with any certainty,Middleton from Shakespeare," Braunmuller said. In a few places, Braunmuller added, he is confident that lines werewritten by Middleton, but "whatever they replaced is gone for good.

Large numbers of plays in the late 16th and early 17th centuries werecollaborative efforts, said Braunmuller, who added that Shakespeare mayhave started his own career by revising the plays of others. Macbeth can be seen as either a heroic warrior or a cowardly mass murderer, while Lady Macbeth -- who is smarter and much more practical -- can beviewed as a villain or a loyal, loving wife. In various productions, bothcharacters have been portrayed in very different ways, Braunmuller noted.

How does Shakespeare make the audience sorry that Macbeth died when onecould be inclined to say he was a terrible, tyrannical murderer, betterdead than alive? The key to the play is that while thecentral figure is amoral, he nonetheless is conscience-stricken and somehowadmirable. The less evil she is,the more evil he becomes, because if there's no responsibility, there'sno tragedy.
