On discharge, ongoing adequate pain relief should be provided, but the patient should be switched to non—mood-altering medications as soon as possible. Patients should be instructed to adhere precisely to the scheduled dosing of mood-altering drugs and may have someone else keep the bottle and administer the medication. Following these suggestions can help keep patients on course with their recovery following surgery and allay many of their concerns.

In fact, I gave a talk myself on this topic at the recent AAN meeting.

Given the scope of the project and the authors involved, I would buy this book sight unseen. There is a substantial need for this topic in the fields of pain, and the authors are well known authorities on the subject. I would say go for it. Every chapter is concise and to the point, and the book can be finished in one brief sitting.

Pain Relief in Those Recovering from Chemical Dependency

The writing is fluid and one does not need to re-read sentences. I am not aware of any other book that brings together such useful information about controlling pain and dealing with patients who chronically use opioids. This is a must read for pain fellows and for any physicians who deal with patients who use opioids.
