LAurore (Texte) (French Edition)

Elsewhere, the senses are beguiled by rhythmic vigour Prologue, track 5 and a pleasing if ephemeral ingenuousness Prologue, track 19 somewhat akin to that contained in pro-Italian Rousseau's one-act opera Le Devin du Village , first performed at court in the previous year. The cast is effective with Jean-Paul Fouchecourt delivering one of the best-sustained performances I have yet heard from him.

His Titon is full of tender longing, his accomplished technique further enabling him to realize nuances in both text and music; ''Que vois je'' Act 3, track 23 provides a telling example of his sensibility and restraint. Catherine Napoli is a lightly coloured and agile Aurora—passages of coloratura demand it—but she does not always find the centre of her notes with assurance and her vibrato is not always sufficiently controlled.

Nevertheless her lively duo with Titon Act 3, track 28 comes off well. Strong delineated characterization is a feature of the opposition, so to speak, with colourful performances by Jennifer Smith and Philippe Huttenlocher. Perhaps he is sometimes too blustery, losing touch with the tonality of the music but his scenes with Aurora and Pales at the beginning of Act 2 are admirably done. Smith is particularly impressive in the two concluding scenes of the Second Act where first having tried and failed to win Titon's heart she becomes enraged and casts her evil spell over him; but throughout, her distinctive and stylistically assured contribution is an adornment to the performance as a whole.

Orchestra and chorus acquit themselves well, too, though each has its occasional weak moments. To sum up, here is an opera which should make wide appeal both for the engaging and approachable character of the music and for its lively performance, well-paced and sensitively directed by Minkowski.

No details are provided concerning the sources used—some textures sound uncharacteristically thin—but that should not deter readers from becoming acquainted with this animated live recording. Based on Book VII of Ovid's Metamorphoses , the roundel in this tapestry shows Aurora, goddess of the dawn, gazing upon the sleeping form of her lover, the hunter Cephalus. She sits among clouds with the morning star shining on her forehead. Cephalus, a mortal who is bound to the earth, reclines on the forest floor, but his dog awakens as the goddess approaches.
