After the wars end, and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and he published a collection of short stories, Drei Frauen, in He also admired the Bohemian poet Rainer Maria Rilke at whose memorial service in in Berlin and he said that by the time of his death, Rilke had turned into a delicate, well-matured liqueur suitable for grown-up ladies.

Opposed to the creation of the State of Israel, he fought alongside the Muslim Brotherhood during the Arab—Israeli War, returning to Cairo, he served as president of the General Union of Palestinian Students from to In the latter part of the s he co-founded Fatah, an organisation seeking the disestablishment of Israel.

Fatahs growing presence in Jordan resulted in clashes with King Husseins Jordanian government. There, Fatah assisted the Lebanese National Movement during the Lebanese Civil War and continued its attacks on Israel, from to , Arafat based himself in Tunisia, and began to shift his approach from open conflict with the Israelis to negotiation.

In , he acknowledged Israels right to exist and sought a solution to the Israeli—Palestinian conflict. In he returned to Palestine, settling in Gaza City and he engaged in a series of negotiations with the Israeli government to end the conflict between it and the PLO.

At the time, Fatahs support among the Palestinians declined with the growth of Hamas, in late , after effectively being confined within his Ramallah compound for over two years by the Israeli army, Arafat fell into a coma and died. While the cause of Arafats death has remained the subject of speculation, investigations by Russian, the majority of the Palestinian people view him as a heroic freedom fighter and martyr who symbolized the national aspirations of his people. Arafats father battled in the Egyptian courts for 25 years to claim land in Egypt as part of his inheritance but was unsuccessful.
