However, Remo benefited more than the Aworis or Egbado under Governor Bisi Onabanjo because Remo was formerly part of Ijebu Province, the government located Ogun State teaching Hospital at Shagamu now named after the governor, and Comprehensive High School Aiyetoro established years before became the only source of joy for the Aworis people was made a satellite campus of the state new University , in other words they had no say in the state they found themselves, the battle for survival of the Egbados and Aworis was left for the Egbas to liberate them as most their Cities remained undeveloped, roads un-tarred, hospitals not built, water system not even improved from the left over from the time of the Old Western region under Chief Obafemi Awolowo, or past military governments of Western state of Adebayo, Oluwole Rotimi or David Jemibewon.

Papa Awolowo provided the Ijebus the head start above other Yoruba Cities and it was the problem we inherited in Ogun State and in the case of Governor Bisi Onabanjo he was ruthless with his tactics and strategies but Awolowo was decent with his. By December, Governor Bisi Onabanjo was removed as governor of the state along with all the governors of the country, in a military coup which announced General Mohamadu Buhari as Nigeria new leader; it announced Col.

Oladipo Diya as the new governor of the State. Diya was another Ijebu man from Odogbolu, about ten miles away from Ijebu Ode and he did change the tempo of Onabanjo government, he reversed some of the policies and cancelled the new polytechnic at Ijebu Igbo, and he relocated all the campuses of Ogun State University to Ago Iwoye. The new military governor was a rascal to watch at Ibara round about, with his green army suit and lots of soldiers and reckless driving on his way to Ibara office and later to Oke Imosan, unscheduled stops and checks to schools and offices were done which often led to dismissals and lost of jobs for the good people of the state, attendance with five minute lateness was enough for a sack or dismissal from work.

This writer was then a teacher in a High School few miles away from Abeokuta the governor entourage could stop like he was chasing armed robbers, while in fact, he was chasing innocent workers stocked with no transportation at Ibara round probably late for work.

It was one of the greatest violations of human rights in the entire life of the good people of Ogun State. Without any respect for the rule of law, many illegal appointments were made by Oladipo Diya, like the appointment of a general manager for the Gateway Pharmaceutical Company at Ikangba Ijebu Ode, a teacher straight from the classroom, was appointed as general manager, one of the reasons the joint project between Ogun State and Euro-Technical of Milano Italy died a natural death and almost million naira gone at a time dollar was almost at par with naira.

This new governor brought a fresh air into the state, despite the record, that shows he was from Ogbomosho, he had his childhood life in the city of Abeokuta, and he was a humble man with a polished behavior. He personally sent letters to all citizens of the state to return home because the past governor had instilled fear in the minds of the rich and poor and Infact the rich stayed away in Lagos and Ibadan to monitor the events of the state in the news from a comfortable distance. Governor Popoola, demand for a new approach to the government of the state, he distributed amenities equally among groups of the state, road in Abeokuta city received attention from the government, the foundation of what became MKO Stadium today was laid by General Popoola, new dual carriages road started springing up and Abeokuta started to look like a state capital all which the city was denied in the past were gradually coming into place , including all the statues of our past leaders for tourism were encouraged by the peace loving governor until General Babangida recalled him for another assignment in Lagos.

It was Popoola behavior in office as governor, which made us to believe that in the Army we had the good and bad and he represented the good and polished side of the Nigerian Army, unlike others before him. General Popoola was probably the best Governor the state ever had and most of his legacies remain the most noticeable development in Abeokuta till today.

He was replaced with another military Colonel, Raji Rasaki, a man always in hurry, with an expanded nose when he was not happy, but the past records of Popoola served as a check on him, if he had succeeded Governor Diya his time would have been terrible. Popoola laid a solid checks and balances for future military governors for the state. The period of Raji Rasaki as governor was almost a period of stagnation, he could not lay his hand on any project and it was not long before he was posted to Lagos State and the worst thief became the new military Governor, navy officer Lawal, who stole everything he could lay his hands on including carpets, rugs and government vehicles, he started a gateway line transport from Abeokuta to his home town Ilorin Kwara State.

He diverted the fund meant for the MKO dual carriage road at Abeokuta to his personal account IBB turned his eyes away from investigating him when the people protested. Lawal died a few years ago. In between all these imbroglio, and imperfect leadership in state, Ogun State never stopped being one of the best in the nation, state produced Dr. What were the contributions of these great men to the state with largest professors, doctors and lawyers within Nigeria, all will be examined in the next chapter as we progress with people and government of Ogun State since If the people of Ogun State missed the democratic leadership of Bisi Onabanjo and level headedness of Governor Dayo Popoola, they were glad the open kleptomaniac Lawal left the state, the Military Governor Joseph who took over from him was another character the state wished never happened.

Perhaps the only regret of Governor Lawal was his inability to directly share or steal the N million promised by General Babangida towards the completion of the abandoned Gateway Pharmaceutical Company at Ikangba, located in a suburb of Ijebu Ode few miles to Odogbolu the home town of General Oladipo Diya. GPC was the most gigantic pharmaceutical company in West Africa, it was conceived by the Unity Party of Nigeria under Bisi Onabanjo with a temporary location at Abeokuta but Infact, it was meant for Ijebu Ode in the mind of the governor, a fact he never told the people, it was to be one of the suppliers of pharmaceuticals for a UPN controlled Federal government, if Papa Awolowo had won the Presidential election, but he lost and the project became an elephant project for Ogun State government and how to scale it down to a reasonable level became a problem.

The lines of production when compared with the American owned foreign pharmaceutical company Pfizer in Lagos, was like Mercedes Benz to a Volkswagen meaning, Gateway Pharmaceutical was the Mercedes and Pfizer the Volkswagen. The foreign partner for the project on 70 — 30 share percentages was Euro technical of Milan, Italy, with Ogun State as majority owner, but subsequent leadership change, bad management including Egba and Ijebu imbroglio destroyed the project that was meant to provide jobs to university graduates and several thousands of others and suppliers and a direct influence on the City of Ijebu Ode and tax returns for the state of Ogun.

Like the Ijebus felt cheated for the location of Ogun State polytechnic at Abeokuta, the Egbas also felt a bigger project of such a magnitude ought to be in the State capital. Sadly as this may sound, the state of Ogun was built on this cat and mouse relationship, suspicious and manipulations of ideas and projects and GPC became a victim of it. Professor, Bamgbose from the minority town of Igbesa who was a Professor of Medicine from the University of Lagos Teaching Hospital LUTH was appointed Chairman Board of Directors for the company, a born again Christian by Governor Diya was a colleague of Professor Olikoye Kuti the Minister of Health who visited the site along with the military President Ibrahim Babangida and after the usual military inspection of the factory without approval of the Supreme Military council, asked the General Manager how much it would be needed to complete the project.

The General also without consulting the Project Secretary, this writer Accountant and the Board gave a N million figure off his head. And a Presidential promise of this money was given and the Board was to liaise with Abuja in that respect. Governor Lawal could not believe this unexpected approval of N million by General Babangida, and he did what most thieves would do.

Lawal dissolved the Board and appointed his commissioners as the members of the new Board, now waiting for the loot to come.

But he was wrong, because Professors Bamgbose and Kuti were colleagues from LUTH and it was agreed with this writer in attendance that was then on study leave, for the money to be given to the new Board in piece meal, along with accountability records as the project progressed. By the time the Governor Lawal was thinking and dreaming of the money, he was posted out of the state for another military assignment and he left the project of sharing the money to the in-coming navy officer Joseph, who got only N40 million out of the N million promised by the Federal Government with a progress note attachment, regrettably and sadly out of N40 million only N5 million was actually spent on the project, the rest was shared top down excluding the Accountant, this writer had resigned from the services of the company for another National assignment in Lagos six months before the release of the fund from Federal Government of Nigeria.

Was the Accountant cheated? Did he do something for being out of the loop? This will be revealed later. The project like an epileptic child never recovered from this open and naked stealing by Governors, Joseph and Lawal and the General Manager of the company, who was also compensated with N5 million and promotion to Managing Director of a project that was still under construction, based on his statement to the state Board of inquiry years later, that was the situation until Governor Osoba became the new Civilian governor under the Social Democratic Party SDP.

The Egbas for the first time now had their own man Chief Olusegun Osoba as the governor of the state. He even too close to the Ijebus than the people of Egba and at one time the Egbas started thinking and wondering if Osoba was a fake Egbaman or not as his immediate root in Oba area of Egbaland could not be traced. His government was a let down to the Egbas and the people of Obafemi Owode local government the local government area he claimed to come from, who thought Osoba would open up their primitive location of the local government to development to what the Ijebu looked like, but history again, repeated itself like it did, in the seventies when the Egbas were disappointed in Governor Oluwole Rotimi of Old western State, they felt let down by this crazy Aremo of every city in the State.

At end of his abortive governorship term, which was cut short by General Sanni Abacha who dissolved the civilian government after the transition government set up by IBB before he bowed out of office, the Egbas could not point to anything of importance from Governor Osoba in his first term as governor of the State unlike Bisi Onabanjo, his governorship was a failure with big Zero minus for the Egbas and the minorities, he awarded the construction of third Ogun River bridge that was too narrow for 21st Century to link up the Adigbe area of the City, and his so called Ota Water project opened with pump and pageantry was found to be a fraud as the taps dried few days later.

What were the agenda?

Again, the Ijebu could not understand why the school should be in the state capital and prepared for the future, Dr. Sonola an Egba man, who was directly recruited from the University of Lagos, became the first Rector of the new school; he went through financial strangulations from the state civil service and when the country returned to civilian rule with the former Ijebu Ode local government chairman Chief Bisi Onabanjo as elected governor under the UPN of Papa Awolowo, all the gains of the state capital were either reversed or slowed down, without funding the new polytechnic, we, the students became involved, through our President Popoola, we approached Chief MKO Abiola to build the school Library because Onabanjo did not believe in a school library, and when MKO donated three hundred thousand naira for the Library, Governor Onabanjo did everything to frustrate the take of the project until MKO left NPN in The Oracle Zents Kunle Sowunmi.
